C.A.C SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON.
That the Scriptures Must be Fulfilled.
UNIT II: THE SCRIPTURES ARE FULFILLED.
October 20th, 2019.

II. GLORIFIED IN ASCENSION (Acts 1:2-11; 1 John 2:1-2)

Jesus Christ ascended to receive the glory due to Him as conqueror of sin and death (Phil. 2:8-11); to be our Mediator And Advocate with the Father (Heb. 9:24); to send the Holy Spirit as He had promised at the Last Supper (Jn. 16:7); and to prepare a place for us as He also promised (Jn. 14:2). The ascension communicates His glorification in fulfillment of scriptures.

A. GOES INTO THE HEAVEN (Acts 1:2-11)

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight (Acts 1:9).

i. For the righteous Servant to justify many,… divided the spoil with the strong, make intercession for the transgressors (Isa. 53:11,12), He would have to ascend into the ultimate presence of the Lord in heaven, at the right hand of God (cf. Psa. 16:10,11).

ii. Christ’s Ascension was foreseen in Psalm (68:18), and predicted by Christ (Jn. 6:62; 16:7; 20:17). This shows that the resurrection of Jesus was more than a temporary resuscitation.

iii. Acts 1:4-8: Jesus had earlier hinted that it was in our interest that He should go back to heaven (Jn. 16:7). Hence, as He prepared to go back to fulfil that promise, He reaffirmed it to them.

iv. vv. 9-11: At the end of His 40-days post-resurrection appearances and experiences, He ascended to heaven, seated at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in in the heavens (Heb. 8:1).

v. Eph. 4:8-10: The resurrected Jesus is the One who truly ascended on high, (Psa. 68:18) far above all heavens, and led captivity captive. He is the One who has been highly exalted above all other authority (Eph. 1:21-23; Phil. 2:9-11). To be saved, we must submit to His authority and confess His greatness

vi. Christ’s ascension into Heaven marks the crowning event of His exaltation, and served, as a necessary precursor to His continued work through the Spirit and the Church.

vii. Christ ascended to heaven, both for our sake and for the fittingness of who He is; it was not fitting that He should remain on earth after His resurrection, but that He should ascend into His heavenlies.

B. WITH THE FATHER AS OUR ADVOCATE (1 Jn. 2:1-2)

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (v. 1)

i. An advocate is a person who comes to others’ aid, or pleads their case before a judge. Advocates offer support, strength, counsel and interceds as well, when necessary.

ii. v. 1: Jesus is the Advocate for those who put their trust in Him. Jesus also calls the Holy Spirit our Advocate in (Jn. 14:16, 26; 15:26; 15:26; 16:7). Interestingly, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, with the Father are one (Jn. 16:13-15).

iii. The English word advocate has been translated from Grk. parakleton, meaning “helper, advisor, or counselor.” In a human court system, an advocate speaks for the rights of his or her client. We call them lawyers because they have studies the intricacies of the law and can navigate through those often complicated statues with precision.

iv. That is the picture we have when Jesus is referred to as our Advocate with the Father. God’s righteous law pronounces us guilty on all counts, but Jesus stands as the Advocate between our repentant hearts and the law.

v. v. 2: If His blood has been applied to our lives through faith and confession of His as Lord (Rom. 10:9-10; 2 Cor. 5:21), He pleads our cases with the Righteous Judge (Rom. 8:1; Col. 2:14).

vi. Our heavenly Advocate knows our hearts and pleada our cases based on what is there (Mk. 2:8; Lk. 5:22). God accepts His Son’s advocacy on our behalf as part of their divine agreement, established before the world began (I Pet. 1:20; Jn. 17:24; Rev. 13:8; Rom. 4:25; 8:3; 1 Cor. 1:30).

vii. Yet even though there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, we continually need God’s forgiveness to encourage us to walk in holiness. As we repent. Jesus advocates for us to restore our fellowship with God.

LESSONS DERIVED

1. Christ’s resurrection that fulfilled Scripture ultimately, is the basis of our Christian faith. Do you believe?

2. We should be afraid of nothing because Jesus lives forever, fulfilling the Scriptures, to plead our course with the Father in heaven.

QUESTIONS

1. Mention three biblical proofs of the resurrection of Jesus.

2. What is Jesus’ present work in heaven?

SUGGESTED ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
ANSWER TO QUESTION 1:

Jesus showed Himself alive by many infallible proofs (Acts 1:3), including :

i. The stone that was rolled away and the empty tomb (Matt. 28:6a; Mk. 16:4; Lk. 24:2-3).

ii. His appearance to Mary Magdalene and some other women (Matt. 28:9-10).

iii. John the Apostle confirmed His appearance to His disciples and how He commissioned them; Thomas was absent then (Jn. 20:19-23).

iv. He also later appeared to the disciples again, with Thomas present (Jn. 20:24-29). He showed Thomas the scars on His hands as evidences that He was actually the one appearances to them after His resurrection (Jn. 20:27).

v. Paul also lists His several appearances to people, including himself, on the way to Damascus (1 Cor. 15:5-8).

vi. His continued presence and works in believers’ lives, today, by His Spirit, is enough proof of His resurrection, in addition to the faultless biblical proofs.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 2:

1. Advocating for believers before His Father (1 Jn. 2:1-3).

ii. Preparing home for His disciples as He prepares to return for everyone who believes in Him (Jn. 14:1ff).

LIFE APPLICATION

A man once lived, who boasted that he would die and resurrect, and then instructed his followers to gather at his graveside on the third day, because he was going to resurrect. He attempted it through diabolical means, but failed, alas! His name was De-Laurence, from India. History is replete with the story of failed resurrection. But Jesus died and was buried, according to the Jewish custom. He rose from the dead on the third day by the power of God. He trod this earth for another forty days before He eventually ascended by the same power of God to heaven, where He is presently, advocating for His own people — the Church. If you accept Jesus Christ today as your Lord and Saviour, you would begin and continue to enjoy the blessings and benefits of His ascension. Are you ready? Or, have you accepted Him already? Then stay glued to Him, forever.

CONCLUSION

We have seen how the scripture was fulfilled concerning the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. This is the basis of our faith as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. It challenges us to look up to Christ for all our desires, as He both intercedes and advocates for us before God. It also guarantees us a place in “His Father’s house”, at the end of the day, provided we remain in H
