February 12, 2020 Food For Today Devotional :- HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN!

WEDNESDAY, 12 FEBRUARY

TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 1: 17 – 27

TOPIC: HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN!

Our text for today’s devotion expresses the power of the opposing worlds: the world of extreme love and the world of extreme hatred. Two mighty men had fallen in battle: King Saul and his son, Jonathan. David, who writes this dirge, expresses his sadness for reasons that are not immediately apparent.

If David would mourn Jonathan his friend, it is understandable. But why would he mourn his “enemy” Saul? David, by his action paves way for the power of love to conquer hate. How are the mighty fallen! – a phrase he repeats three times, indicates the intensity of his love for these two men.

Saul had wielded power, but used it to seek to kill David. When David had his chance to rejoice at the death of his “enemy”, he grieves instead. It is not by might, not by power but by my Spirit, says the LORD. Some say, “let my enemies die!” that is cowardice! A conqueror says “let those who oppose me live to repent from their evil ways!” Are you wishing an enemy death? Think again, you may just be the enemy!

QUESTION: Should your enemies die or live to repent?

PRAYER: Instruct me on whom my real enemies are and if I am my own enemy, please help me to repent, Amen.
