February 23, 2020 ECWA Food For Today Devotional :-  AN UNUSUAL INHERITANCE

SUNDAY, 23 FEBRUARY

TEXT: 2 KINGS 2: 1-13

TOPIC: AN UNUSUAL INHERITANCE

An inheritance is usually something a person or group of persons take ownership of when the owner dies. We note in today’s text that Elijah had been Elisha’s master. The time had come for Elijah to be taken away and Elisha was standing close to inherit his master. Normally, when you inherit someone, you only take ownership of what the person owns – you cannot inherit what is not available.

Elisha’s request to get a double portion of Elijah’s spirit was therefore unusual. Elijah confirmed this by saying that Elisha had asked a difficult thing (v10). But as it turned out, Elisha’s request was granted. Chariots of fire surfaced again as they did in yesterday’s devotion. This time, they came to take God’s servant home! From this encounter, Elisha knew he had God’s support each time he needed it – the chariots of fire! Elisha’s later ministry truly proved that he had received a double portion of his master’s spirit. However, that Elisha had a double portion of Elijah’s spirit did not take anything away from Elijah.

On the Mount of Transfiguration, it was Moses and Elijah who appeared with Jesus not Elisha (Matt. 17: 3). Some mentees fight their mentors over prestige or vice versa – that is not “the spirit of Elijah!” God’s grace upon your life, in whatever quantum it comes to you, is not to build your ego but the Kingdom of God. It comes to you not by your might or power but by the doing of the Spirit of God!

QUESTION: Who is your “Elijah”?

PRAYER: LORD, give me grace to serve You, Amen.
