UNLOAD YOUR BURDENS ON HIM!

Read: 1 Samuel 22:1-4
1 Samuel 22:1-4 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him.
And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.
And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.
MEMORISE:
And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So, he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him (1 Samuel 22:2)
EXPOSITION
There were four types of people who came to David at the cave of Adullam: (1) his brethren and father’s household; (2) everyone that was in distress; (3) everyone that was in debt; and (4) everyone that was discontented. They were not great or rich men, but men of broken future, dreams, and homes; men of restless spirit; those who knew not what to do with themselves. The distressed people were those who were persecuted under Saul’s government on account of their love for David. The debtors were such as under Saul’s arbitrary misrule, oppressed by their creditors while not being protected by the government (Exo. 22:25). Discontentment literarily means ‘bitter in soul’ (cf. 1 Sam. 1:10). They were not bitter in souls because of their desires for new things, but they had anxiety in their souls due to the ever-worsening condition of the kingdom under Saul. Therefore, they all came in groups to find solace under David’s wings.
INVITATION:
Are you in distress, persecuted or being given mental torture due to your social or spiritual affinity? Is your financial situation giving you sleepless nights? Are you a person with broken dream or dysfunctional home? Are you facing powerful enemies whose weapons are never laid down day or night? Listen: Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you (Psa. 55:22). He also says, Cast all your anxiet on Him because He cares for you (1 Pet. 5:7). The word “cast,” in Greek, is not like fly-fishing cast. This literally means like you have a big stone and you just let it go. You don’t even toss it, you drop it. God says, “Unload every single anxiety you have on Me.” Christ cares for you! You are only saved and secured in His everlasting arms.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Give glory to the Lord for He is your Refuge and Comfort in times of trials.
2. Release those burdens that are sinking you to the Lord who is able to do exceedingly more than you could ever think or imagine.
3. Thank the Lord for hearing you as you call in time of trouble.
