THE DANGER OF UNGODLINESS
Read: Romans 1:18-21
Romans 1:18-21 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
MEMORISE:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18)
EXPOSITION
“Ungodliness” is that which stands in opposition to what is “godly”. It is anti-God in nature. When Paul says “ungodliness,” he means ‘irreverence towards God.’ This manner of life includes idolatry and impiety; any failure to take God seriously. It describes any failure to commit one’s life to God, which is any failure to live for the glory of God. All these are aspects of irreverence. Idolatry becomes the lead sin of humanity’s rebellion against God. It becomes the chief sin from which all other sins come.
“Because that which is known about God is evident within them, for God made it evident to them. For even though they knew God, they did not honour Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:19-21)
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness.. Anything involving God is holy, pure, and morally perfect. So, it is with His wrath for which there will be no apology. Divine wrath is a necessary part of His perfect holiness. If there is no wrath, there is no holiness.
Jonathan Edwards in his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” likened the wrath of God to a rising river that is flowing down from the throne of God in heaven upon sinners. At this moment, this river of divine wrath is being dammed up and held back by the mercy of God. God is giving opportunity to sinners to repent of their sins, to turn from their stubbornness and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord Jesus, by Your mighty power, destroy anything standing in opposition to God in my life, in Jesus’ name.
2. Holy Spirit, empower me to be holy, pure, and morally perfect like Jesus, in Jesus’ name.
3. Holy Ghost fire, consume every spirit of ungodliness in our churches today in Jesus’ name.
