World Sight Day
TOPIC: DELIVERANCE FROM SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS
Read John 9:35-41
[35]Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
[36]He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
[37]And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
[38]And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
[39]And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
[40]And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
[41]Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
MEMORISE: And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind” (John 9:39)
EXPOSITION
It is interesting how this chapter of John begins with a theme of ‘Night’ that was coming to the world (v. 4) and Jesus being the Light of the World (v. 5). This sets the stage for the story of the virtually impaired man and the religious leaders who could physically see but were blind spiritually to see the Light of the World present in their midst (Jn. 9:35-41)!
The man’s situation depicts the state of all human beings – born blind; born sinners (v. 1). Even the disciples did not get their own theology right, for they erroneously thought that, either the man’s parents or he himself must have committed a grievous sin that brought about his blindness (v. 2). Jesus corrected this notion, and having believed and followed the Light, the disciples’ ignorance ended. But the Pharisees had problem in accepting this. Firstly, they denied that it was the same former blind man who was then standing before them, was able to see. Secondly, when confronted with the evidence, instead of acknowledging Christ the Prophet, the Light, they chose to remain in the darkness of the world by throwing the man out of the synagogue (vv. 18,34). Thirdly, when Jesus gave the true description of their state of blindness, because of their rejection of Him, they were taken aback, and asked in bewilderment and pride: What? Are we blind too? (v. 40) What these religious leaders failed to recognise is that, they were spiritually blind and thus incapable of doing anything visionary.
To have physical sight is a blessing, but to be spiritually seeing is a double blessing, and if you genuinely do what the blind man did when Jesus asked him, Do you believe in the Son of God? {he responded, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him (vv. 35,38)}. Then, you are truly a blessed of the Lord! Knowing and worshipping Jesus Christ, as that blind man, shows that a man is not blind in the real sense. That is the truth we should hold unto this World Sight Day.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Give praises to God for blessing you with spiritual sight.
2. I reject the visionless lifestyle that leads people to perishing, in Jesus’ name.
3. Pray for those in the world of fashion and entertainment, both in the Church and the world, that God should deliver those leading people astray from their own spiritual blindness.
