PARTAKERS OF DIVINE NATURE

Read: 2 Peter 2:2-4

2 Peter 2:2-4  And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

MEMORISE:

By which have been given us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust (2 Peter 1:4)

EXPOSITION

As believers, we partake in the very nature of God. Our sharing in His nature is another description of the new birth by which we receive the life of God, in order to conform to God and His holiness, so that we do not perish with the world. (Eph. 4:22-24). According to Romans 5:12, every human being is born with Adamic nature, which is sinful; we have a natural bent toward pleasing self. Our natural selves cannot please God (Romans 8:8). Our sinful nature keeps us from fellowshipping with God, keeps us in bondage to sin, and leads eventually to spiritual death (Romans 6:16).

When we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are saved (Acts 16:31), and we undergo a radical spiritual transformation. That is what Peter means when he says we are made partakers of the divine nature. We are made new creations in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). God allows us to participate in the divine nature in order to keep us from sin and help us to live for Him. When we are born again, God by His Spirit, empowers us with His own moral goodness (2 Cor. 5:21). As partakers of the divine nature, believers do not have to follow the sinful nature any more. At salvation, our old nature is defeated, and we receive a new, divine nature that desires the things of God (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We should therefore not allow sin to reign in our mortal body to obey its lusts through the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 6:12).

PRAYER POINTS

1. Holy Spirit, empower me more and more to live a victorious life over sin as a partaker of the very nature of God.

2. Holy Spirit, empower me to live a life that pleases God every moment of my life, in Jesus’ name.

3. Holy Spirit, empower all Christians more and more, with the new nature that desires the things of God, in Jesus’ name.
