TOPIC: BEWARE! DO NOT LOOK BACK (1)
Read Luke 9:57-62
[57]And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
[58]And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
[59]And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
[60]Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
[61]And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
[62]And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

EXPOSITION
The statement of our memory scripture was a reply to the one who told Jesus, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house” Jesus is talking about a farmer using a plow on a field. The goal of the farmer is to make straight rows in the earth. He does this by looking at a distant object. But rather than looking straight ahead at a distant object is constantly looking back. The result is crooked and curved rows in the earth. What a mess! This is a picture of our relationship with Jesus. True followers of Jesus constantly, continually fix their eyes on Him and keep them there through the urgent, the tragic, and in spite of the desire for wealth, comforts and acceptance in this life.
Lot’s wife is a good example of what it means to look back. She looked back because she placed a higher priority in what she was leaving behind, her earthly possessions. In doing so, her action indicated regret for having left Sodom and for that she paid with her life. As Christians, we cannot serve two masters simultaneously (Mt. 6:24), we cannot go towards the Kingdom with our attentions diverted elsewhere. Jesus is talking about our fitness to serve Him. It is a heart decision that counts. Failure to follow Jesus with a totally committed heart has made many believers to lose spiritual blessings and opportunities for greater ministry. In our Christian walk, we must be prepared to put God first in all things and keep our eyes fixed on Him.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord Jesus, give me total victory over every power distracting my attention from following You wholeheartedly.
2. Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to fix my eyes on You and keep them there throughout my Christian journey to the Kingdom of God.
3. Pray for all Christians in the troubled parts of the world, that God should help them to continually fix their eyes on Jesus to the end.
