TOPIC: UNDERSTANDING THE KINGDOM’S PRINCIPLES FOR LIVING (I)

Read Mark 12:28-34

[28]And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

[29]And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

[30]And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

[31]And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

[32]And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

[33]And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

[34]And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

MEMORISE: And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:33).

EXPOSITION

Every kingdom, or government has its own codes of conduct and patterns of lifestyle. The kingdom of God is not an exception. In the spiritual sense of it, the kingdom of God is the same thing as the ruling of God in the hearts of His own people here on earth. One important principle of the kingdom demands that we are to live on earth to serve God and our generation.

First, we are here on earth to live and serve God with our lives. The Scripture says, ‘This people I have formed for Myself; they shall declared My praise’ (Isa. 43:21). You are to live your life for God. This is the primary purpose for living. Serving God is the same thing as living for Him. If you truly love God, you will serve Him willingly. We love by serving and serving by loving. The Scripture gives the reward of serving God wholeheartedly: ‘If they obey and serve Him, They shall spend their days in prosperity; And their years in pleasures’ (Job 36:11).

Second, serving our generation is the second purpose for our living. The memory Scripture for today’s devotional makes us understand that loving God goes together with loving our neighbours. You are not here on earth by accident. Everything God created, is there to solve human problems. You, too, are here to solve human problems by serving them with the abilities, talent, power and position God has endowed you with. Death becomes tragedy, if one dies without fulfilling his or her purpose in serving his/her generation. The Scripture declares this truth about David: ‘For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption’ (Acts 13:36). Read the determination of Joshua in Jos. 24:15. What do you say?

PRAYER POINTS

1. I ask for spiritual capacity, O Lord, to use my whole life to serve You and my generation.

2. Lord, give me the heart of service to live above spiritual laziness.

3. Father, let there be revival of true service in our local churches as of old in Jesus’ name.
