MANAGE YOUR MONEY WELL (I)
Read: Proverbs 6:1-3
Proverbs 6:1-3 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
Do this now, my son, deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
MEMORISE:
A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge, and becomes surety for, his friend (Proverbs 17:18).
EXPOSITION
Making-money is important, but it is not as important as managing it. If you know how to make money and you do not know how to manage it, money cannot stay longer in your hand. You must be sensitive and educated about money management. You cannot have financial freedom, if you fail to manage your money well. There are facts proven by the Bible that we need to know as far as managing money is concerned.
The first among them is that biblical principle which says, ‘Do not be one of those who shake hands in a pledge, one of those who is surety for debts’ (Prov. 22:26). This is a warning to avoid being a surety for debts on behalf of other person. The next verse gives reason to avoid it: ‘If you have nothing with which to pay, why should he (the creditor) take away your bed (valuable property) from under you?’ (v. 27). There is nothing bad in being a surety for other person, but you must know your worth (Rom. 12:3).
Don’t be too emotional when it comes to the issue of money. Many people do not know how to say yes or no at an appropriate time. It is because of this issue many people went bankruptcy. Your life, business and finance are not secure, if you make a pledge you are not financially capable to fulfil (cf. Prov. 6:1-3; 11:15). As you try to help other people to come out of their problems, don’t put yourself into self-inflicted problems (Prov. 20:16:27:13). As a Christian, you have to do good to all people, but learn to apply wisdom along the way as you express/extend your act of goodness.
PRAYER POINTS
1. I ask for more wisdom to be an expert in money management in Jesus’ name.
2. Nothing whatsoever will lead me to bankruptcy in Jesus’ name.
3. Give me, O Lord, courage to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ at the right time.
