BE SENSITIVE AND VIGILANT
Read: 2 Kings 2:8-14
2 Kings 2:8-14 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
MEMORISE: And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father the chariot of Israel and it’s horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces (2 Kings 2:12)
EXPOSITION
Hebrew 12:1b-2 pre-empts the fact that many things could distract believers on the way to heaven. For Elisha, there were distractions from his fellow sons of the Prophet who wanted him downcast. There were distractions from his boss who pressurised him to back off, though a test. Another was Jordan River obstacle that his boss helped him to remove. Received a portion of the anointing isn’t a joke not to talk of double portion. But with sensitivity, you will see the unseen, hear the unheard, and know the unknown. Secret things, though belong to God, are for His children who care (Deut. 29:29). If he had the sons of the Prophets, or “obeyed his boss,” and backed off, hoisted God’s power had suddenly fallen on him at home?
To Jesus Himself, the disciples must remain separated for some days to be endued with His Power for the job (Acts 1:4,8). Your passion and hard work will be put to test in the line of your duty. Your eyes must be fixed on purpose. Be sensitive enough to gain from your God given leaders.
When you listen to sermons, hymns and songs in the church, do you really hear/see anything that God wants you to hear/see? How much lesson do you draw from Christian novels and movies you watch to advance your life positively? To Elisha, his master’s departure did not call for celebration, just as weeping wasn’t necessary. His focus was getting the key he needed to enter into his destiny of succeeding Elijah as the reigning prophet in Israel.
Don’t expect a second chance; it might not come. Be sensitive to, and utilise your God- given opportunities. Then, your level will change, your name will change, and your ministry will go to the next level, positively. Avoid environmental pollution. You can’t see God if you are seeing and listened to men.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, make me sensitive in the day of my visitation.
2. O Lord, open the eyes of my understanding to see, hear, and know what You have for me.
3. Father, help our leaders in all facets of life to be sensitive to the plight of the masses/followers/less privilege etc.
