Title: Salt and the light of the Earth
(Matthew 5: 13-16) “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness , how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven.
Jesus said we are the light and the salt of the earth. Everyone knows that salt is what adds flavor to the food we eat and also it has a very powerful function in the body. Light also has a very wonderful function . Darkness does not stay where there is light. When light comes darkness will vanish.
Jesus said we are the salt and the light the earth needs to see. For a child of God to be the light of the earth and the salt , is not by choice but something we must carry automatically from the moment we receive our salvation. Think about it, we are created in the image of God,He is light, (John 1:5) The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has overcome it. Jesus did not say we are going to be the light of the world, or you may be the light or salt of the earth, no He said you are the light of the earth, it is automatic.
The criteria for being the salt and the light of the earth is to become a born again child of God. No other qualifications. Jesus said it to remind us that the moment we are born again we become citizens of heaven. To remind us that no matter whatever that have happened in your life , even if you were the worst sinner before you became born again, that did not matter anymore, you have been washed by the blood of the lamb, that qualifies you to become salt and the light the earths needs to do well. This is the time we have to show the world that we are the light and the salt, no other time to show it than now.
The question is how do we become salts and lights of this world? As Christians we are followers of Christ. Jesus was the light and salt of the earth.
He went about doing good, showing Love, helping and healing the seek, preaching the gospel. How are we representing Christ today in our lives. Are people seeing us as the light and the salt of the earth ? Most of us are hiding our identities. There is no difference between us and the rest of the world. We cannot show our light in the midst of darkness. Instead of tasting salty in the world , we are tasteless. Because of cares of this earth, we are not prayerful, we don’t read our bible, we don’t preach the gospel to the perishing world. God is disappointed on our behaviors , children of God don’t care anymore. We are not afraid of God anymore. We do whatever we like. The early disciples were willing to do the work of God and use the name of Jesus to manifest the power of God. For us today we are worship God the way that pleases self not God. We are going to the opposite direction.
May God help us understand whom we are in the Lord in Jesus name. Amen.
Prayers: God that you for whom you are . Please help my light to shine on earth so that people will see it and glorify your name in Jesus name. Help me to know that I am the salt of the earth, see me as the salt of the earth in Jesus name.
