SELFISH BY NATURE

Read: Philippians 2:1-4

Philippians 2:1-4 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,

Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

MEMORISE:

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (Philippines 2:3)

EXPOSITION

Most times, a careful analysis of situations helps to make most of them. In a management school of thought, man has been described as selfish because he naturally wants and seeks to satisfy, justify, depend and help himself, no matter what! This is the nature of man. Self-centeredness, egoism, self-interest, self-satisfaction, etc. are evident in the natural man.

Consider the standard of the Ten Commandment in Exodus 20. You will discover that any individual who is selfish, will find it difficult to keep them! In terms of worshipping God only, a selfish person will want to satisfy his or her own interest by valuing other things than God.

It is self-interest that will make a married man not to consider his home when temptation to commit adultery hooves around him! Thieves, robbers, kidnappers, assassins and others violent criminals are motivated by their selfish ambitions to become ‘great’ through evil (Rom.1:29-32). What about corrupt public officers? What else would make a normal human being steal billions from the public treasury? Selfishness of course!

From this morning’s piece, it can easily be derived and seen that selfishness forms larger determinant of sins in the world. It may take a variety of forms, but all evils can still be traced to selfishness! Dear devout, how about you? How do you rate your partner? What percentage of your life is allocated to serving God? It is you first, others last or  vice verse? Jesus Christ is our perfect example. There is no record of Him that does not exemplify humility and selflessness (Phil.2:6:8). You have to emulate Him (Phil.2:5). If selfishness is removed, what a better society/world we would have! From this day, show unselfish attitudes for others to follow suit.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, deliver me from every selfish  tendency.

2. Lord, help me to be practically unselfish in dealing with human beings.

3. Father, help couples to overcome selfishness in the use of time, money and body in Jesus name.
