THE ANCIENT LANDMARK
Read: Proverbs 22:28
Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.
Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless. (Proverbs 23:10)
We live in an era where the younger generations consider the older ones ‘old school’. They even castigate their decisions, actions and ideas. They so much believe in themselves that they see their own perspectives as superior and more scientific. They believe they are new eras, as if there is, or would be any new thing under the sun. This philosophy and it’s boomerang effect have continued to hurt the young people like a shadow.
The young people need to understand that principles do not change even when methods are changing from time to time. One of things that can never change no matter the level of change going on in the world is the Word of God. God’s words stand sure and settles forever in heaven. What we have to do is to tilt ourselves to it and let it direct our paths.
The Bible warns us against shifting the ancient Landmark. What is the ancient Landmark? Literally, it is the boundary stone, pillar or anything built to demarcate a portion of land from another. It is also know as corner piece in surveying. It is aimed at preventing land dispute or conflict. Are there no people who specialise in removing corner pieces and throwing them away or replanting them to illegally gain more land for themselves? Moreover, ancient Landmark has spiritual connotations. It talks about rules, laws of the land, principles (natural and spiritual), standing orders or instructions that must be strictly adhered to.
There are several reasons why the ancient Landmark should not be shifted and one of them is seen in the episode of King Saul. He went ahead to break the covenant between the Israelites and the people of Gibeon. Even though the agreement not to destroy the Gibeonites was erroneously made by Joshua, God knew about it and stood by it. Saul jumped the protocol by killing the Gibeonites, and he smelled pepper. God did not spear him. He made the Gibeonites to ask for the heads of his children and grandchildren .There is always a retribution for moving the ancient Landmark. Don’t dare it.
1. Lord, help me not to pass my boundary in any matter, spiritual, physical and otherwise.
2. Let the spirit of cheating and rule-breaking die in me permanently, in Jesus name.
3. Lord, help our teeming youths to know that they can only succeed when they guide their ways with Your Holy Word.
