WHAT IS YOUR OTHER NAME

Read: John 1:37-42

John 1:37-43The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Him.

But Jesus turned, and as He saw them following Him, He said to them, What are you looking for? [And what is it you wish?] And they answered Him, Rabbi—which translated is Teacher—where are You staying?

He said to them, Come and see. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they remained with Him that day. It was then about the tenth hour (about four o’clock in the afternoon).

One of the two who heard what John said and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He first sought out and found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found (discovered) the Messiah!—which translated is the Christ (the Anointed One).

Andrew then led (brought) Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon son of John. You shall be called Cephas—which translated is Peter [Stone].

MEMORISE:

You serpents! You spawn of vipers! How can you escape the penalty to be suffered in hell (Gehenna)? (Matthew 23:33)

EXPOSITION

A Yoruba wise saying translates, “A person’s name inspires him to behave, either sanely respectfully, or otherwise.” There are several sources of names for people, including God, parents, circumstances, fancy, action, exigency, among others. Generally, a name is a means of identification and proper address of a person, animal, thing, or phenomenon. It is divine, and it sticks, having impact and lasting consequences on the bearer.

What is your name? Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, events have proven that human identity and appellation must change, and had changed from the original. Cain, the first born of Adam and Eve, killed his brother, Abel, and became the first murderer in history. That was his other name.

What us your other name? Jesus was hard pressed to reveal the true nomenclature and the other names of the Pharisees and Sadducees of His days, who were nothing but opposers of the Truth. They came as individuals and in groups to tempt Him with both rational and irrational questions; all to the same end and objectives – His fall (Jn.8v38-45). Such labelling by the Lord as brood of vipers, evil, adulterous, hypocrites, etc. are some description that show their other names.

Simon, son of Jonah, was called Peter; James and John were also called ‘sons of thunder’ just as father Abram was renamed Abraham, and his wife Sarai to Sarah. Yet, Judas Iscariot added to his good name ‘thief, betrayer,  and the son of perdition. What is your other name? Remember, a good name is better than silver and gold (Prov.22:1).

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Thank God for the Good name He is helping you to build.

2. Pray that God will help you to keep your good name.

3. Pray that God will help our family, political, church, community, etc. leaders to think more of making good and godly name than amassing material things.
