FOOLISH VOW

Read:  1 Samuel 14:24-31

MEMORISE:

Do not be rash with your mouth, And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God (Ecclesiastes 5:2)

EXPOSITION

Vow is a solemn promise or assertion by which a person is bound to an act, service or condition. Many at times, we make a vow due to the prevailing circumstances without thinking through the implication or consequences. Due to the importance of the battle at hand, King Saul made a vow of not eating, until the battle was over. The vow looked good but brought great pains to the people. Fighting battle while exhausted (without food) could be dangerous. The vow made the people sin against God as some ate the meal with blood and Jonathan innocently broke the vow.

Vows are not all bad, great people like, Hannah made wise vow. When next you are to make a vow, ensure it is a wise one. The very one that will not put you and your family in danger. Foolish vow not only hunts and hurts but brings no good, rather a disastrous effect. It can lead to disaffection and division; it may also lead to death. Never rush in vow making.

It is said of a woman who waited on God for the fruits of the womb. In her years of waiting, she made a vow that if God could answer her prayer and give her a child, he/she will be lent to God. Should the child be a female, she would be married to a servant of God and if he is a male, he would be a minister unto the Lord.

God answered her prayers with a set of twins – a male and a female. But this woman broke her vow by preventing the male child to be a minister to the Lord as vowed and denied another minister who wanted to marry her daughter. Her excuse was that the ministers of the gospel are not well pald. Though, the twins became what their mother wanted them to be but lost their lives untimely.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, help me never to make vows that will hurt and hunt me later in life.

2. Give me the grace O Lord, to fulfill all my vows as and when due.

3. Help our political leaders to fulfill the promises they do make to the masses during electioneering campaigns.
