EVEN JESUS WAS HUNGRY (II)

Read: Mark 11:12,13

Mark 11:12-13  And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:

And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.

MEMORISE:

And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs (Mark 11:13)

EXPOSITION

Yesterday, we looked at the implications of Jesus being hungry for our daily Christian living – discipleship. Today, God is going to help us to see what Jesus did in response to the hunger that visited His humanity at that juncture, and the implications for His disciples.

Note that as Jesus was hungry, even as God who could have commanded food to come to Him where He was while sitting comfortably and unruffled, He went out in search of the food He needed. He, by this, teaches us God’s attitude to unnecessarily sitting down and folding arms in expectation of ‘manna’ from heaven. God detests laziness. Of course, no food for the lazy (2 Thess. 3:8-10).

Dear devout, we should learn from the fact that Jesus ‘went to see if perhaps He would find something’ to eat (v. 13a). Despite that He wasn’t even sure of getting the food, being human at that time, He still went out in search. He didn’t use that as a flimsy excuse to lazily sit back expecting ‘manna’ from heaven. The slothful refuses to go in search of the food God has positioned for him because of flimsy excuses (cf. Prov. 26:13).

Don’t be the lazy type. Go and acquire more relevant skills. Go back to school – week-end, on-line, sandwich and attend relevant seminars. Discover a God-sent mentor (not a godfather). Do something meaningful and God-glorifying with the hands and talents plus vision God is giving you. Coupled with His presence and grace, you won’t return empty-handed. He doesn’t allow the diligent to go home hungry in the end (cf. Prov. 22:29). Remember, when Jesus was hungry, He went in search of the needed food!

PRAYER POINTS

1. You spirit of laziness, get out of my life, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord Jesus, bless my godly search for food, in line with Your command.

3. Lord, banish the spirit of slothfulness that lead youths into fraudulent activities (yahoo-yahoo, etc.).
