WALKING IN THE OLD PATH

Read: Jeremiah 6:16,17

Jeremiah 6:16-17  Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.

MEMORISE:

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it (Matthew 7:13,14)

EXPOSITION

God is so concerned about who we are, what we do and how and where we walk. He blesses the man who walks not in the way of sinners (Psa. 1:1). Walking shows activity, and God expects His children to be very active in His service in obedience, righteousness and truth.

Walking in the old path connotes going for, and with God; departing from the way of sin and death. The path that people tread today reveals their values, where they belong, and where they are heading to. Broad is the way that leads to hell. Many walk therein. The trend is to go the way of sin. Only few are determined to walk in the narrow way – Christ.

People who walk in the darkness tag it modernisation or civilisation, because they love darkness more than light (Jn. 3:19,20). Sin is just too appealing to them that they don’t want to hear anything about God. They wine and dine with the Devil. The worst part of it is that, many of these people are among the congregants in churches and some are preachers/pastors.

Where are you walking? Walking in the light of God guarantees life, peace and safety from looming calamity. No one who walks in sin sees the light of God and that leads to stumbling. The old path according to the text is the path of righteousness that the patriarchs of old walked on, and it led them to life. Did they regret walking on the old path? No at all. It is the way of holiness and godliness (Isa. 35:8). Jesus is the way that leads to God. He is the way of peace. In Him, there is life and truth. When you make it a date to continue to walk in Jesus without wavering, you are walking on the old path of righteousness, holiness, and eternal life, and consequently making yourself available for uncommon divine experiences.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord God, don’t allow me to reject Your correction that is so profiting for my life, in Jesus’ name.

2. O Lord, deliver me from the spirit of this end-time, and free me from the entanglements of sin and Satan.

3. Lord, don’t let Your Church become slave to modernity and civilisation; make it easy for us to walk in Your righteousness and holiness till we get to eternity.
