ii. Listing different places they have visited and telling what they discovered.

Facilitator’s Opening Remarks
Biodiversity is important for our emotional and psychological well-being. We all naturally enjoy a “breath-taking” view of a particular landscape. We find certain places restful. We enjoy seeing plants and animals we are not familiar with. This is an important basis for the tourism industry. People are willing to pay to see well-preserved elements of biodiversity.

I. What Is Tourism?
• Tourism is a temporary short term movement of people to destinations outside their place of residence.
• Tourism is undertaken for recreation, sightseeing, pilgrimage, adventure etc.
• Places where many tourists stay are called “resorts”.
• Places that people go to for tourism are called tourist destinations.
There are a lot of reasons why people travel for tourism:
▪︎Some people travel to learn about the history or culture of a city or country, or learn about the people who live there, or their ancestors.
▪︎People from cold places
sometimes like to relax in the sun.
▪︎ Many people from the north of Europe or North America travel to warmer places and visit beaches.
▪︎ Some people travel to do an activity which they cannot do at home.
▪︎ People sometimes visit friends and family in another city or country.
▪︎ Finally, some people enjoy a change in scenery. City people go to forests or deserts, and vice versa.

II. Types of Tourism
The following are some types of tourism:
1. Recreational tourism:
Tourism is often an activity for recreational purpose. Most tourists look for a change and rest; this is the reason why package tours have become so popular.
2. Environmental tourism:
Rich and affluent tourists prefer to pay more visits to remote places where they get pollutionfree air to breath.
3. Historical tourism:
Some tourists are interested in knowing about ancient civilization and administration in a particular area. They visit heritage locations, temples, churches, museums etc.
4. Ethnic tourism:
This refers to people travelling to distant places looking for their roots and attending to family obligations. Marriage and death bring people together to their native places. Persons who are settled overseas try to visit their place of birth to boost ethnic tourism.
5. Cultural tourism:
Some people have interest in knowing how other people or communities live, survive and prosper; the kind of culture they practice, whether their art and music is different from others. So in order to acquire knowledge and understand their culture, they travel to places of interest to them.
6. Adventure tourism:
There is a trend among the youth to take adventure tour. They go for trekking, rock climbing, river rafting etc. They organise camp fire and stay under the blue sky. This tourism is meant for people with strong nerves who can tolerate stress. Other forms of tourism are; health tourism, when people visit nature cure centres and hospitals providing specialist treatment, religious tourism where people attend to religious duties and visit places of religious importance, music tourism when people move to sing or listen to music, and wild life tourism which can be an eco and animal friendly tourism.

Tourist attractions have the ability to attract worldwide attention which transcends from not only setting up a physical edifice but also embodies structures or places of natural and physical value. They depict historical significance and outstanding beauty capable of causing awe and amusing the public. The physical evidence of genius architectural designs and brain work, coupled with the mysterious dynamism of natural ingenuity make such places the go-to for a memorable tourism experience.
