DOING THE WILL OF GOD

Read: Luke 22:39-43

Luke 22:39-43  And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

MEMORISE:

saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42)

EXPOSITION

There are two powerful forces in life that everyone finds oneself in-between, especially when one wants to make a major decision in life. They are man’s will and God’s will. Whenever you want to make a major decision in life, each one of the wills appeals to you to dance to its tune. The Christian should grow to spiritual level where only the will of God can appeal to him. The Bible says, ‘For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish’ (Gal. 5:17). If you do the will of God, He takes control and glorifies Himself in your life. Conversely, if you do your own will, flesh takes control, and that can be disastrous

Doing the will of God, in many occasions, is not easy at all. It is sometimes unpalatable. Jesus is our prototype of doing the will of God even when it doesn’t sound pleasant. The Lord revealed this in the Garden of Gethsemane when He was to choose between death and life, as regards the most important redemption of man. He initially prayed, ‘Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me’. Even at that, He was still saying, ‘if it is Your will’, i.e. if it would please God. From onset, He wasn’t ready for anything that wasn’t in God’s will for Him. Eventually, He chose the way of death which was the perfect will of God for His life ‘nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done’ (Lk. 22:42). No one with such passion ever regrets it.

Doing the will of God pays a lot, if one does it willingly. According to our Lord Jesus, God will never leave you alone if you learn to do His will every time (Jn. 8:29). The Psalmist knows the importance of doing the will of God, and says, ‘I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart’ (Psa. 40:8). The will of God for your life may appear somewhat difficult or unpleasant today, but if you make up your mind to do it, the end will be glorious. Go through the Bible and find the will of God for your life in all things clearly spelt. God bless you.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, help me to understand and abide by Your perfect will, generally for the world, and specifically for my own life.

2. Father, give me the grace to make Your will a top priority in my life.

3. Pray for our young ones to cultivate the passion for doing the will of God, and it alone.
