YOUR ATTITUDE TO YOUR ASSETS
READ 1 SAMUEL 30:21-25
21 Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were.
22 But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, “Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.”
23 David replied, “No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us.
24 Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.”
25 David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.
MEMORIZE: David replied, “No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. (1 Samuel 30v23)
EXPOSITION
Assets are those possessions, properties and belongings one assigns values to as useful things that can catch one financial benefits and prestige, and contribute to one’s success. They are one’s property that can be taken by law for debt settlement, or that forms part of a dead person’s estate. In accounting, they are the items on a balance sheet that constitute the total value of an organisation. Your assets are valuable things you wouldn’t want to lose. Your attitude to such is what the Holy Spirit is probing into, today.
King David is our point of call. God knew why He allowed those Amalekite marauders to loot David’s camp while he was away (1 Sam. 30v1-2). Indeed it was to teach us lessons today. (cf. Amos 3v6, 1 Cor. 10v11). David and his men returned home only to meet emptiness, but God assured David of recovering the lost assets, and it happened exactly (c.f.. Num.23v19).
Upon their return some miscreants among them refused to share their David’s spoil (1 Sam.30v20) with those who couldn’t go with them to battle, though with genuine reason (vv.21-22). There will always be people like that in organisations. It takes true leaders to do the right thing in such situations. Thank God for David. The attitude underlying his statement in v.23 teaches us a lot.
David saw those possessions as what the Lord has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hands the troop that came against us. That defines the life of a man who has come to know the Lord and is in the right relationship with Him (c.f. Acts 13v22). Your attitude to your assets (possessions) tells who you are. Hope you aren’t the stingy, selfish, self-centred type? We own nothing, because we create nothing, we came on earth with nothing, and we’ll return taking nothing (Job 1v21,22). Why the much ado about nothing?
PRAYER POINTS
1. Thank God for everything He has chosen to give you, now and in eternity (2 Pet.1v3).
2. Ask for forgiveness in those areas you have behaved as if you are the owner of your assets, pray for the grace to please God, henceforth.
3. Pray for CAC Babalola Region, our father in the Lord, the Superintendent, and its officers at the various levels, as led by the Spirit of God.
