TOPIC: Characteristics of godly Leadership 4: Righteousness and Justice.
MEMORY VERSE: Isaiah 62:2.
TEXTS:
Prov.29:2; Jer.22:11-17. AIMS: To i. help us understand righteousness and justice as applied to leaders in the Church; ii. identify the character traits of righteous and just leaders; iii. realise how God feels about acts of unrighteousness and injustice, and the steps which could be taken to correct it where it exists.
INTRODUCTION:
Righteousness and justice are twin attributes of the Triune God which should manifest in any godly leadership. They both relate to doing what is right, especially, in accordance with biblical principles. This study seeks to stir up something in us that will encourage us to retrace our steps from the path of unrighteousness and injustice that is becoming quite common in the Church. The Scripture demands that our righteousness be practical, visible, and enduring (Psa.112:3; Isa.62:2). The significance of this study hinges on Prov.14:34 and 29:2.
STUDY GUIDE
1. Define and explain ‘righteousness’ and ‘justice’ in your own words, and apply them to leadership in the church. Church of Nigeria 2019 Bible Study
2. From the following texts, identify some of the character traits of righteous and just leaders: Gen.18:25; Jos.22: 9-18, 29-31; 1 Sam. 30:21-24; Isaiah 32:1; Jer.22:13-17.
3. Discuss some factors and situations that militate against righteousness and justice among leaders in the church.
4. How would you describe the disposition of God toward (un)righteousness and (in) justice? Ps.11:7; 33:5; Amos 5:7-12, 16-17, 21-24.
5. How may we tackle unrighteous and unjust acts in our midst? 1 Kings 21:17-29; Lev.6:1-5 (restitution); Eze.33:11; Amos 5:14-15; 2 Tim.4:2b.
CONCLUSION:
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne. It is therefore impossible to be a godly leader without being just and fair in whatever we do, especially as leaders of God’s people. Indeed, the nature of God totally detests acts of unrighteousness and injustice. May we repent and walk with God!
