SUB THEME : GODLY LEADERSHIP
TOPIC – Characteristics of godly leadership 7 – Good Listening and Support Building.
TEXTS: Nehemiah 5:1-13; Luke 8:1-3; Acts 6:1- 7.
MEMORY VERSE: Nehemiah 2:18
AIMS: To
i. Understand the concept of ‘support building’ and ‘good listening’ among
leaders;
ii. realise the implications of poor listening and support building skills in
leaders;
iii. develop the know-how for these godly leadership traits .
INTRODUCTION:
Good listening has to do with the disposition of a leader to
give undivided attention to the complaints, opinions or issues raised by others
for the good of all; while ‘support building’ is the deliberate action(s) of the
leader to gain the support of others, especially in relation to the purpose and
direction of an organization or calling. Usually, listening leaders readily attract
support. It is sincerely hoped that this study will help to tackle the incidence of
poor listening and poor support building in churches .
STUDY GUIDE
1. Explain what it means and entails to be a ‘good listener’ and ‘support
builder’ as a leader. Nehemiah 5:1-13; Luke 8:1-3; Acts 6:1- 7.
2. Good listening.
a. Discuss how the following can impact on or enhance good listening :
i) Patience
ii) Perspective swap – getting into the other’s thought ;
iii) Personality – that of the leader and the led;
iv) Passion for result – growth.
b. What challenges you to good listening? (See in Numbers 27:1-5; Joshua
14:6-13; Neh.5:1-13; Acts 6:1-7
3. Support building.
a. How are the following likely to encourage ‘support building’?
i) Charisma
ii) Character
ii) Communication
iv) Companionship/camaraderie.
b. How may the following Scriptures challenge us to build good support for our
churches? Mark 3:14; Matt.4:18-20; Acts 15:40; Neh.2:15-18
4. What are the likely consequences of the gross absence of these godly traits ?
CONCLUSION:
The Church will be spared much trouble if all leaders are good
listeners and support builders. The ‘high Horse’ many climb when they come to
leadership positions, has done much harm to the Church. God calls us to
humility and repentance, as His servants.
