SUB-THEME/2: GODLY LEADERSHIP.
TOPIC : Some Biblical Examples of Ungodly Leadership 3:
MEMORY VERSES : Titus 2:11-12
Jeroboam, Ahab, and Ahaziah .
TEXTS : 1 Kings 21: 20-26; 14: 7-15; 2 Chr. 22: 1- 9.
AIMS : To
i. identify what made the three kings ungodly leaders ;
ii. discover the consequences of their ungodliness;
iii. learn from how these ungodly kings ended their reigns .
INTRODUCTION :
There is something common to kings Jeroboam, Ahab and
Ahaziah-involvement in idolatry. Apart from Jeroboam, the other two kings
were negatively influenced by their wives and mother respectively. Jeroboam

dumped the God of Israel to set up an idol at Bethel and thus misled the whole
nation. Ahab ran a battle against Prophet Elijah. Ahaziah followed the footsteps
of Ahab. This study unveils their atrocious acts and the consequences that
followed the failure of leadership of the three kings .
STUDY GUIDE
1. a) Mention and discuss the negative attributes that portray the leadership
of Jeroboam, Ahab and Ahaziah as ungodly, 1 Kings14: 7-9; 21:20, 25-26;
2 Chron. 22:1-5 .
b) What are some specific atrocities committed by :
i. Ahab ( I Kings 16:31-33; 21:8-16 );
ii. Jeroboam ( I Kings 12:28-33; 13:33-34 ); and
iii. Ahaziah ( 2 Kings 8:26-27 ).
2. Discuss the consequences of their wickedness and their end .
i. Ahab ( 1 Kings 22:34-39; 2 Kings 9: 7-10 );
ii. Jeroboam ( 1 Kings 14:17-19; 2 Chron.13:16-20 ); and
iii. Ahaziah ( 2 Kings 9: 27-28 ).
3. What godly principles could have averted such ugly experiences of these
kings and which could have served as lessons for us today? 2 Chron.
20:20c; Eccl.12:13-14; Acts 17:30; Titus 2:11-1 2.
CONCLUSION : God has given every leader the opportunity and resources to
lead well; so leaders not dare blame anyone for their failure. We will all give an
account of our stewardship as leaders to God someday. So, do your duties with
reverential fear.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT : When we fail to obey God’s messengers, we will
certainly face God’s wrath.
