II. BORN OF A WOMAN (Matthew 2:1-5; Luke 1:1-4,26-38)
Christianity is not a religion developed on myths, fables and legends. The beliefs of Christianity are premised on the life of Jesus Christ. God spoke the Word and the woman conceived, miraculously.

A. THE SEED OF THE WOMAN (LK. 1:1-4, 26-38).
i. vv. 1-4: Luke set out to show those things about the promised Messiah …fulfilled among us. His gospel was the result of painstaking investigation, having consulted with eyewitness of Jesus’ ministry. This was made perfect by divine revelation and inspiration.
ii. God had strongly emphasized ‘the woman’ in Gen. 3:15. The problem of humanity had come because of the devil’s deceit that she fell for. God programmed to solve the problem using the Seed of the woman.
iii. v. 35: For the Scriptures to be fulfilled, God bypassed the ‘man’. No wonder the visitation of the Holy Spirit to the woman, Mary, who had highly found favour with God (vv. 28,30). So, Joseph wouldn’t have to meet with Mary for the Son of God to come. No wonder God only allowed them to be betrothed, and not fully married, before conceiving Jesus (vv. 26,27; Matt. 1:18).
iv. The Son of God was born by a virgil (a woman; Gal. 4:4) in fulfillment of Isa. 7:14 (cf. Gen. 3:15). God spoke the Word and the woman conceived, miraculously (Matt. 1:18ff).
v. vv. 34,35a: The Holy Spirit will come upon you. Mary would not have to worry how this would happen (v. 34). The Son of God would be born of the Holy Spirit by the woman alone. This distinguished the first Adam from the second (Jesus) (cf. 1 Cor. 15:45-47).
vi. The thought isn’t after the way of men, but thy of God’s Spirit. The power of God overshadowed Mary, when God’s Spirit spoke to her womb, bringing about the much needed conception.
vii. Divine arrangement of God made Joseph and Mary to be betrothed to each other, and for the scripture to be fulfilled, Holy Spirit visited the woman without the copulation of the man and the woman before the conception of the Holy Child.

B. THE LOWLINESS OF HIS BIRTH (Matt. 2:1-5)
So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet” (v.5).
i. Isa. 53:2 connotes the lowly nature of the birth and growth of the expected Messiah, though the Jews were later expecting His coming to be royal.
ii. Matt. 2:1: …Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea… Apart from the fact that Jesus would be born of a woman, His birthplace was another issue in God’s mind.
iii. vv. 1,5: Some parents would usually like to choose the best birthplaces for their children — countries, cities, hospitals, etc. God pre-planned Jesus’ birthplace — considerably small and insignificant place for the kind of Visitor it received the day Jesus was born (cf. Mic. 5:2ff; Lk. 2:6,7).
iv. Another notable factor that determined the lowliness of Jesus’ birth is His choice to come through His own creature (mere mortal) (Lk. 2:6,7). To aggravate the humiliation, He was placed in a stinking animal’s feeding trough (Lk. 2:7).
v. What else can describe how He condescended from glorious height to assume the human nature of servant and live among us (Jn. 1:14; Phil. 2:7,8).
vi. Jesus was born in obscurity, loneliness and humiliation. He did not enter the world in a comfortable home, or surrounding. The birth took place away from people, all alone (Lk. 2:7).
vii. Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the whole world, was born into a poor family. He was born in the small village of Bethlehem, not in a city. Nobody cared for Jesus Christ’s earthly parents when He was born. He was born lonely without relatives. That is great humiliation. He was placed in a stinking animal’s feeding trough.

LIFE APPLICATION
The world is full of sin, but the coming of Jesus Christ fills the gap sin created between man and God. The believers are made heirs of God through Jesus Christ. The believers receive sonship and heirship through Christ, by faith. The Spirit of Christ sent by God to dwell in our hearts and to give us a personal relationship with God. It is only God who can decide the right thing for man’s life to save us. He sent His Son to deliver man from the terrible condemnation of the Law.
The world is full of sin, but the coming of Jesus Christ fills the gap sin created between man and God. The believers are made heirs of God through Jesus Christ. The world needed a deliverer. God sent His Son to deliver man. He did not sent an angel or any other creature, but His own Son. He was born under the law, and lived under the law, in order to secure the perfect righteousness of the law for man. Because God loves man so much, He sent His Son to deliver man from the terrible condemnation of the law. And He did this in His own ordained time. Believe Him and you will be saved. May the blessings we have so far received in this lesson remain permanent with us, even as we move into the next lesson.
