TOPIC : Some Biblical Examples of Ungodly Leadership 4:
Herodias, Jezebel and Athaliah .
MEMORY VERSE : 1 Kings.21:25 .
TEXT : Matt. 14:3-12; 1 Kings 16:31; 21:7-15 .
AIMS :To
i. discover the negative influence of a wife or mother of a leader over his
leadership;

ii. identify the consequence of such a negative influence on the family or the
nation
iii. learn how leaders can overcome such negative influences.
INTRODUCTION
Today, we shall consider the influence of three tough women in Israel’s
corridors of power they are: Herodias, Jezebel and Athaliah. Herodias was a
granddaughter of Herod the Great and was the queen who demanded for the
head of John the Baptist on a platter. She was first married to her father’s
brother (Herod Philip I) and later left him and got married to Philip’s brother
(Herod Antipas) while Philip was still alive. Jezebel was a phenomenon of
personified evil ( Rev. 2:20 ), a tyrant queen who corrupted her husband and
the nation by promoting pagan worship and at one point, became the power
behind the thrones of Northern and Southern Israel. Athaliah was Jezebel’s
daughter; she ruthlessly killed her grandsons to take over the throne after her
husband’s husband death 2( Kings 11:1 ).
STUDY GUIDE
1. Point out the various ways each of the characters influenced leadership :
a) Herodias – Matt. 14: 3-12 ;
b) Jezebel – 1 Kings 16: 31; 21: 7-16, 25-26 ;
c) Athaliah – 2 Chron. 22: 2-3, 10-12 .
2. What were the results of the negative influences on the family members and
the polity?
a) Herodias – Matt. 14: 8-13 ;
b) Jezebel – 1 Kings 16: 31; 19: 1-2; 21: 23-26 ;
c) Athaliah – 2 Kings 11: 13-16 ( 2 Chr. 23: 12-15 ).
3. How can a leader avoid such negative influences in a family or nation?
Deut. 7: 3 & 2 Cor. 6: 14-16; Deut. 6: 6-9; Pro. 31:10, 30; Col. 3:1 .6
CONCLUSION : Having a godly wife and mother is a great asset to whoever is
placed in leadership. The Church, on her part, must be careful in choosing
leaders who have wives and mothers with godly profiles. Ungodly wives and
mothers can wreck havoc through their ungodly influence on a leader.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT : Halt your godless wife/mother or she will destroy your
leadership!
