WHEN A DOG RETURNS TO ITS VOMIT
Read: 2 Peter 2:12-22
2 Peter 2:12-22 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.
They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.
With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood!
They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.
But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.
For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.
They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”
If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.
It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.
Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
MEMORISE:
These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. (Jude 1:12).
EXPOSITION
It is worrisome today, the way believers in Christ and God’s ministers turn against Him to follow their own ways. Many who sing false gospel music today started from the church as choir members and leaders. But for the dictates of their bodies, they blended with the world, and many under the guise of sponsors. Did they start in falsehood? Not all started wrongly! Some gradually changed overtime, whether as a result of association or peer pressure, lust for materialism, only God knows. They had tasted the light of but have refused to detach themselves from their past ungodly lives and friends. But the Bible says Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself am enemy of God (Jas 4:4).
You can’t be in the kingdom of God and still peep into the world. If the world eventually grabs you back, you may never return to God. Balaam for greedy gain accepted to curse God’s people and was doomed for it (Num. 22;23:31:8). No matter how clean you want to keep the pig, it will always return to the mud, it’s natural habitat—Demas returned to the world. It is just normal for dogs to return to their vomits, most especially when there is none to help it maintain cleanliness. That is the nature of dogs (we can refer to dogs today because it is the World Rabies Day, and rabies are related to dogs); mud is the natural habitat of the pig; godliness is the God-programmed nature of the Christian. Why should you be swimming in perversion?
Remember: Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62. It will be worse for backsliders, and to convert them will be hard. So beware and be content with God’s will and timing for your life.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, deliver me from my ugly past.
2. Oh Lord, purify my body, soul and Spirit.
3. Father, by Your mercy, bring back gospel musicians and preachers who have joined themselves to the world for conformity, fame, and wealth.
