OVERCOMING YOUR GREAT ENEMY OF SUCCESS
Read: 1 Samuel 17:31-37
1 Samuel 17:31-37 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
MEMORISE:
Moreover David said, “The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)
EXPOSITION
Proverbs 3:5 admonishes us to trust in the LORD with all our hearts, and not lean on our own understanding. A Bible Commentary on this verse says; “Wholly and securely rely upon God’s wisdom, power, and goodness, and upon His providence and promises, for direction and help in all thine affairs and dangers. Think not to accomplish thy designs by the strength of thine own understanding, without God’s blessing.”
This clearly summarised the way to overcome your great enemy of success as exemplified by David in the passage above. Whereas Saul and all Israel were viewing the situation from human perspective with confidence of their armour and self-glorification, David viewed the situation from a spiritual perspective, a practical faith, and a deliberate focus on God’s glory.
David believed in the living God who was in a covenant relationship with His people. David not only had faith in the Lord; he also had faith in the Lord in this difficult and challenging situation. As Paul expressed it, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13). When David heard Goliath’s taunt, he didn’t think of himself, rather, he was concerned about God’s glory.
Therefore, to overcome the great enemy of success, we need to view the situation from a spiritual perspective (God’s wisdom, power, and goodness, and upon his providence and promises), have a practical faith in the living God and deliberate focus on God’s glory.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to trust in You with all my heart in facing any situations in my life.
2. Heavenly Father, give me the grace not to lean on my own understanding while facing the challenges of life, in Jesus’ name.
3. Holy Spirit, give all Christians especially those in the troubled area of the world the grace to have a practical faith in the living God with deliberate focus on God’s glory.
