SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
THEME: THE UNITY OF BRETHREN
UNIT THREE: NOW AND IN ETERNITY
LESSON ELEVEN
December 6th & 13, 2020
TOPIC: REWARD OF UNITY

Memory Scripture
The ants are a people not strong, Yet the prepare their food in the summer
(Proverb 30:25).
When God’s people are united in Him, they do great exploits for Him. Unity pays!

BRIEF COMMENT
The reward of unity always accrues to those who are united in purpose, doing good ans godly things in common. The ants are typical example of such who operates on a common ground. In spite of the fact that they look not strong, they achieve what many strong persons cannot achieve. With unifying forces, they go all out in the summer and pull together all they can, for storing, and consumption during the winter, when they wouldn’t be able to come out to fend for food. That is wisdom per excellence “saving for raining days.” The wisdom and great unity of the ants make the Bible admonishes that the fool should go to them for wisdom. God expects us to be of one purpose and do things in common with others to achieve the ultimate purpose of God. May the Holy Spirit help us to make use of the lessons learnt from the ants in Jesus’ name. Amen.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
1. The popular saying, “United we stand; divided we fall,” is very imperative here. Nothing can be done successfully in disunity.
2. Definitely, we will achieve a lot when we join hands together than when we operate individually. One will chase a thousand and two will chase ten thousand. The difference is clear.

BACKGROUND SCRIPTURES: Acts 2:1-4
AIM AND OBJECTIVES

AIM: To show that much can be achieved when we flock together in unity in Christ than when we do things selfishly.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, readers should have been be able:
i. state clearly what kind of unity God expects from His people, especially the leaders;
ii. state the importance and reward of unity to the brethren, the body of Christ;
iii. identify causes and consequences of disunity among brethren; and
iv. better determined, and be showing this daily, to work for unity in the body of the body of Christ.

Hallelujah to our God for the privilege He accorded us to successfully study lesson 10, in the last two weeks. The topic, for our reminder, is THE UNITY OF THE WICKED PEOPLE. May we not be counted among the wicked. Amen. Wicked people, regardless of their number in different situations, tend to join hands against God’s standard and programme, but they have always met with their waterloo in the wicked, here and in the end. We are clear on what would be the result of the coalition of the ungodly or the wicked, here and in the world to come. May God help us to do away with lifestyles that would depict us as wicked by God and man. Amen.

Here, we come to the eleventh lesson in this wonderful series of the Sunday school lesson that hinges on the unity of brethren. Today’s lesson, and of course, that will spill over next week, centres on the reward of unity. The Holy Spirit will help us to look in-depth into what brethren stand to gain, if they flock together in unity.
Christians and Christianity today will thrive positively, if the issues of oneness and togetherness is stressed and embraced. Unity is the state of agreeing and working together. It is also the state of being joined together to form one unit. It can be deduced, therefore, that unity means togetherness (Gen. 13:6) and fellowship (Judges 19:6). Unity of faith binds people of God together (Eph. 4:13).

This lesson shall be learnt along the line of what unity of the church is, its important, the harmony among believers and the reward of unity in Christendom. May Holy Spirit assist us to fully adapt these lessons for the development and strength of the body of Christ. Amen.

INTRODUCTION TO EACH DIVISION
This is a two-week lesson, broken into two divisions I and II, with each division further divided into A and B.

DIVISION I: THE GODLY UNITY
This division hinges on unity and harmony among leaders of God’s people and the importance of unity among brethren. The section opens with how God has exemplified the kind of unity, is expecting among brethren. And, it elucidates the promise of God to unite the leaders of His people in Isaiah 52:8.

DIVISION II: REWARD OF UNITY
In this section. Disunity And Its Consequences and Unity Is Highly Rewarding are discussed. Luke 11:17; Romans 16:17 and 1 Cor. 3:1-3; 6:6; Acts 4:23-31; Romans 12:5; Ephesians 4:13 are our points to call. God repays everyone according to his/her deeds. He is never partial. Those who choose to work for disunity among His people would have themselves to blame. Those who encourage unity would rejoice forever in Him.

LESSON EXPOSITION

THE GODLY UNITY (1 Samuel 14:15; Psalms 133:3; Isaiah 52:8; 1 Corinthians 12:13; James 4:1-6)
December 6th, 2020.
Something is godly when it presses and pleases God’s will and purpose. Such thing becomes ungodly when it is carnal, selfish, sensual and devilish, and advances unholy course. The unity in Babel for example, was an ungodly unity. The people tried to make name for themselves at the expense of God’s glory and His expansion programme for man. Aren’t you a partner in evil?

A. UNITY AND HARMONY AMONG LEADERS (Isa. 52:8; 1 Cor. 12:13)
Your watchmen shall lift up their voices, with their voices they shall sing together; For they shall see eye to eye When the Lord brings back (Isa. 52:8).
i. God has shown to us in a number of ways the unity and harmony that His people (the church) should exhibit (cf. Gen. 1:1-3).
ii. The concept of “Let us make man in our image” reveals the level of unity and harmony characteristic of God, and that He expects from us. God did the work in unity (Gen. 1:26; 2:4-24).
iii. The work od creation is not without the full contribution of the Trinity. Jesus worked with the Father and the Holy Spirit (Gen. 1:1; Job 33:4; Psa. 104:30; Isa. 44:24; Jn. 1:3,10; Acta 4:24; Col. 1:16; Heb. Hos. 1:2).
iv. Believers are expected to follow God’s example unity and harmony in their pursuit of eternal goals (Jer. 3:18; 50:4; Hos. 1:11).
v. Jn. 17:2: The prayer od Jesus is that they all must be one as He is one with the Father (one fold), and He succeeded in removing all causes of separation (Eph. 2:14).
vi. 1 Cor. 12:13: The body of Christ should have zero tolerance for discrimination and all the causes of disunity.
vii. Isa. 52:8: God promises to restore unity among the leaders of His people: they shall see eye to eye when the Lord brings back Zion. This connotes restoration, which leads to sustenance od God’s goodness, victory in battle (Judgs. 6:1-3), and reformation (1 Chro. 12:38: Ezra 10:4).
viii.God depends on the leaders of His people to teach His people His commands and statutes. It is like leaders like followers. Godly leaders cannot but allow godly unity among brethren.

B. UNITY AND ITS IMPORTANCE (1 Sam. 14:15; Psa. 133:3; Jas. 4:1-6)
Where do wars ans fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war (Jas. 4:1-2).
i. Jas. 4:1-6: A lot of vices have been identify as the promoters of disunity among brethren, such as quarrelling (Acts 15:36-39; 1 Cor. 3:3), favoritism (Jas. 2:1-4), hypocrisy (Gal. 2:11-14; 1 Pet. 2:1) and immaturity (1 Cor. 1:10-12, 3:1-2).
ii. Ungodly desires to have ans act like the people of the world, and pride, have continued to rob brethren of the unity they are to enjoy.
iii. Psa. 133:3: Here, the pleasantness of unity among the people of God, the body of Christ, is stated and the benefit the body stands to derive: fruitfulness, oneness, strength, support and encouragement. “Two are better than one” (Eccl. 4:9-12). It is also promotes love (Eph. 4:15-16).
iv. Unity of Brethren engenders godly collaboration. It promotes good working relation among people, e.g. Moses and Aaron (Exod. 4:16), Caleb and Joshua (Num. 14:6), Elijah and Elisha (2 Kgs. 2:6), the Seventy evangelists sent forth two by two (Lk. 10:1), and Paul and Silas (Acts 15:40).
v. 1 Sam. 14:15: Godly unity among brethren glorifies God and makes Him happy (1 Cor. 3:9; 2 Cor. 6:1).
vi. A Yorùbá adage is translated thus: “The reason snakes easily fall prey to humans is because they don’t walk together.” This is a true picture of the brethren in Christ. The more knitted in Christ we are as a body, the more the devil and his cohorts are afraid of what God can do through us. May God rebuke schism, division and war among us.

LESSON DERIVED
1. Only God can unite His people, and He has promised to do do.
2. Unity of the brethren to see the will of God done is a pleasant thing. It engenders harmony and cooperation among brethren and glorifies God.
