FEAR HIM

Read: Exodus 1:15-22

Exodus 1:15-22 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom one was named Shiprah and the other Puah,

When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, she shall live.

But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded, but let the male babies live.

So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, Why have you done this thing and allowed the male children to live?

The midwives answered Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; they are vigorous and quickly delivered; their babies are born before the midwife comes to them.

So God dealt well with the midwives and the people multiplied and became very strong.

And because the midwives revered and feared God, He made them households [of their own].

Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son born [to the Hebrews] you shall cast into the river [Nile], but every daughter you shall allow to live.

MEMORISE:

But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded, but let the male babies live. (Exodus 1:17)

EXPOSITION

There is so much wickedness in the world. The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]? (Jer. 17:9) Pharaoh was not satisfied with his enslavement of the children of Israel. So, he proceeded to secretly limit their increase and growth in the land of Egypt by commanding the Hebrew midwives — Shiphrah and Puah — to kill all male children as soon as they were given birth to (v.16). These women had a quality in them that befits a child of God; they had the fear of God in them. But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded, but let the male babies live. So God dealt well with the midwives and the people multiplied and became very strong. (vv. 17,20).

You need to revere God. God is wise in the heart and mighty in strength. Who has [ever] hardened himself against Him and prospered or even been safe? (Job. 9:4) Familiarity breeds contempt; Christian need to beware of taking God for granted. Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering and come [before Him] into His courts. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; tremble before and reverently fear Him, all the earth. (Psa. 96:8-9). What is the evidence that you fear God?

The Hebrew midwives chose to please God when they were faced with the tough situation of having to choose between obeying the wicked king to ‘make it’ big time, or turning the King’s order to obey God, and be blessed of Him. You can do the same. All who fear the Lord will hate evil.  Therefore, hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech (Prov. 8:13). Once you fear God, you do not have anything/anyone to fear again. Respect all but FEAR God only, and learn to please Him at all times (Heb. 10:31).

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, frustrate the plans of my enemies.

2. Lord, raise leaders that will fear You in this nation.

3. Lord,  create in us the heart that fears  You, always.
