BE ROOTED AND BUILT UP IN HIM

Read: Colossians 2:4-7

Colossians 2:4-7  And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

MEMORISE:

Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving (Colossians 2:7)

EXPOSITION

The Lord is giving us two cautions, today. These include not allowing people to beguile us with enticing words, and secondly, walking in Christ the way we first received Him. There are all kinds of enticing words being brandished as sermons, today, that are not really the Word of God. They are just philosophies of men, positive thinking, or human psychology. They are usually sugar-coated words that are quite appealing but lacking in basis, from the standpoint of the Word of God. Such messages, as beautiful as they may be, cannot carry the power of God.

The Bible says, He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions (Psa. 107:20). It is the Word of God that heals and delivers, not philosophical sayings or coinage. If those things work, then it is magic and not the power of God. God never claim credit for what He has no hand in. Do not be carried away by sweet talking pastors, who just declare human wisdom and not the wisdom which is from above (Jas. 3:17-18). If such talks carry you away, you may gradually lose interest in God’s Word. We must be rooted and built up in Him, not in the philosophy and psychology of life (Col. 2:7).

There was once a pastor who claimed that when he started his ministry, he had to read a lot of positive thinking, philosophical and psychological books in order for him to be able to captivate his audience. He was wrong. He should have soaked himself in the Word of God and ask the Holy Spirit to give him unction to function. Being oratory is not necessarily the power of God. That was why Paul told the church at Corinthian that he did not come to them with oratory, but in the demonstration of the power of God (1 Cor. 2:1). Don’t rely on the talent, gift or grace you think you have. Instead, be rooted in Christ and be regularly built up to meet His standard. You can’t imagine what He can do through you.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Holy Spirit, help me to be more rooted in You and the Living Word of God, from time to time.

2. Lord, purge me of every form of pride in what I think I am, or have, in Jesus’ name.

3. Pray for the Youth Fellowship of the Church, for the grace to be more courageous in preaching the gospel, the undiluted message of the Word of God, practising and preaching.
