SIX POWERFUL PHRASES OF THE LORD’S PRAYER (1)
Read: Matthew 6:9-13
Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
MEMORISE:
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. (Matthew 6:7)
EXPOSITION
The disciples came to Jesus and requested He taught them how to pray. These are men who had been praying before they knew Jesus. As Jews, they must have been observing their different hours of prayers, but they must have seen Jesus approach to prayer as unique (Lk.18:1; cf. 1 Thesis.5:17). Jesus taught the disciples 6 powerful phrases that align us with God in His will. The first 3 are:
1. The Father’s Family Relationship: Jesus began with a simple word of relationship, Father (“Daddy” in contemporary English). What matters most to God is our relationship with Him. This is a revelation of Gods love toward us that makes God to always be attentive to us in the place of prayer (Psa. 34:5). Do you see God as your Father, or a machine that provides answers to prayers?
2. The Father’s Kingdom: Your kingdom come. Your will be done.. challenges us to focus our attentions on God’s kingdom (Matt. 6:33; Col.3:1,2). Christ wants us to know that there is a better place than this earth. The Lord’s prayer is not just about prayer. It us also about connection with God’s divine environment (Jn.14:1-3). Pray with the Father in mind.
3. The Father’s Provision: Give us today our daily bread is Jesus way of making us understand that God is able to provide for our needs if we can place our demands on Him rightly (cf. Phil.4:19). We are full of needs, but we have the Father who can supply all, both the felt and real needs, according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus.
From the above three phrases, its clear that God wants us to enjoy fellowship with Him even as we also enjoy His unlimited provisions to meet our daily needs. Stay connected and be forever grateful that God is our God.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, thank You for adopting me as Your own child, and for the privilege for my household and I to continue enjoying Your inexhaustible provisions.
2. Lord, I receive the grace to be Your kingdom-mind always.
3. Lord Jesus, restore the right, biblical type of praying in our churches against the dangerous trend of selfish praying prevalent in many Churches, today.
