SERPENT ON THE POLE VERSUS CHRIST ON THE CROSS
Read: Numbers 24:49
MEMORISE: So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. (Numbers 21:9)
EXPOSITION
On this World Wildlife Day, let us remind ourselves that the serpent embodied the devil at the Fall (Gen.3:1). God placed man in the Garden with the opportunity to obey Him and lead the human race into eternal blessings. But God also put the forbidden fruit in the midst of the Garden as a test of Adam’s loyalty and obedience to Him. Similarly, test is a necessity in the wildness journey of life. In the Israelites case, …the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart… (Deut.8:2). Eve submitted to the temptation, sinning in the manner common to the human race: through the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life (1 Jn.2:16,17). As you go out today, note the following:
i. The sin (Rom.5:12:21; Jas.1:15) You can never graduate to sainthood, unless you have undergone the server temptation of sin. And you mustn’t yield, for yielding is sin.
ii. The Satan. Revelation 12:9 speaks of the ancient serpent who is called the Devil and Satan (Rev.12:14,15).
iii. The Pole (Num.21:49). In the wilderness, the people sinned, and were bitten by serpents. Serpent in Eden symbolised the devil that persuaded man to sin, by which he deserved to die! Why didn’t God ask Moses to make a bronze of another animal other than the serpent? There is no other animal that has eternal connection with Satan like serpent.
iv. The Cross (Jn.3:14,15). The fiery serpents that invaded the camp of Israel are representative of the deadly consequences of sin. The brazen serpent erected by Moses (Num.21:9) represents our Sin-bearer (cf.2Cor5:21) who removed the penalty of sin.
v. The seed(Gen.3:15). Christ is the seed of the woman who crushed the Serpent’s head on the Cross. Now, you are a seed of Seed of the woman, and because His seed is in you, you can overcome Satan, Sin, the flesh and the world.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Thank You Lord for the victory You have given me by Your blood.
2. Confess your victory over Satan, sin, the flesh and the world.
3. Pray for zoologists and other wildlife experts working day and night to fulfil the mind of God on those creatures as well as give us highly informative documentaries.
