LITTLE MORE PATIENCE (1I)
Read: Exodus 32:1-10
Exodus 32:1-10 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
MEMORISE:
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him” (Exodus 32:1).
EXPOSITION
The account of the Gold Calf is one of the deciding events in the life of Isreal as a nation as they moved towards nationhood. It is so important that Moses recounted it in Deut. 9:6-29. God has some things for us to learn in the episode (cf. 1 Cor. 10:11).
God had invited Moses up to the Mount of G commune with Him and receive what would become the constitution of the developing nation, Isreal. Neither they nor Moses was divinely informed of how long it would take for Moses to return to them. Does God owe anyone of us explanation for whatever He does, even in relation to us? No of course. All He expected of them was to trust and follow His leading, notwithstanding the oddness of it. Did He tell disciples how long they would wait for the arrival of the promised Holy Spirit No.
Impatience is a dangerous thing in life. The wickedness in the heart of the children of Israel made them to feel impatient and uncomfortable with the supposed delay of Moses in returning from the mountain (less than 40 days). We are in the hurry-hurry generation.
People rush in and out of God’s presence, even in and out of marriage. Are you patient enough with God on your life issues?.
Even Aaron was not patient enough, the way God expected it, before going ahead to make the gold calf. As soon as they finii this foolishness, Moses arrived. What followed is nothing to be desired. Impatience with God leads to disaster and death.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Ask God to forgive your impatient attitudes and tendencies.
2. Lord, give me the grace of waiting on You so that I can receive the best You have for me.
3. Pray that God should rebuke and remove the spirit of impatience ravaging our youths that lead them into vices, robbery, money rituals, etc.
