Title: Boasting About Tomorrow

( James 4: 13-17) Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say. “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that . As it is , you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Everyone of us has plans of what we have mapped out to do this year. From January 1st of every year we get our new year’s resolutions, we plan on building houses, getting married, having children, buying cars, opening new business, furthering our education. The lists of what we all plan for ourselves, children and our friends goes on and on and on. We line up  our agendas and we set them up in motion, but not knowing that our Heavenly Father May have a different plan for us this year for example. Devil also has a different plans for people too. That is why some people don’t fulfill their plan which they have made during the year. Though God’s plan for us is for us to have hope and future, but the devil’s plan is for people to live in sorrow, in fear, or even not to exist at all.

The Bible is instructing us today not to say we are going to do this or that without bringing God unto your plans. If someone is planning anything ahead of time and saying tomorrow I will do this or that , the person might not be able to fulfill that plan.

Some people have left their house to work or any business venture and did not come back home. Some people have traveled to a very far place to achieve one or two goals but something happened along the road they did not make it. Some people have started building a house and along the road lost their job, got sick, died and did not finish it. Some people have started school and did not make it to the end because of one reason or the other. Life has no guarantee, here on earth.

The Bible encourages us to make our plans in the Lord, only by God’s grace we can achieve our goals .(Proverbs 27:1) Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day will bring. Nobody knows what the next hour will bring that is why we need to hand everything we do  to God. He is a master planner, when we plan without Him we make very awful mistake. (Proverbs 3:6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths straight.

Everyone of us is guilty boasting about tomorrow, that vacation we are going to take this summer, that mansion we are going to build before the year ends . Yet we have no idea what is going to happen in the next hour. It is not a taboo that as Christians that we make plans of what we are going to do in the future. But what the Bible is trying to tell us is that it is wrong to make plans about our future as if we are the owner of our lives.

We have no atom of control over our lives , Only God has the power over our lives. Knowing that there may be unforeseen circumstances that may happen that we may not have control over, that is why when we get up in the morning we must ask God to have His way in our lives. Ask God to come into your life and direct your ways, your life I mean all your activities on a daily bases.

Every thing we plan to do next year, next day, next month plan according to the will of God and by His grace.

God is a merciful God, He doesn’t like when we do things on our own acting like there is no God. When we acknowledge that everything we do is by His grace, it make Him happy, make Him know that He is in control of you lives and the strength you have, that without Him we cannot do anything.

Prayer: May God help us to acknowledge Him in our lives in all we do in Jesus name.
