LITTLE MORE PATIENCE (1II)

Read:  1 Samuel 13:5-15

1 Samuel 13:5-15 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

MEMORISE:

And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the Commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your Kingdom over Isreal forever” (1 Samuel 13:13).

EXPOSITION

Saul had been misbehaving in the previous chapters of the book of first Samuel. In chapter 13, a major decider in the life and kingship of Saul came on board. The Philippines gathered together to fight with Isreal (vv. 3-7), and that was a very critical thing. War would definitely ravage and deplete the people. That would have actually made them uncomfortable and impatient, humanly speaking. The people would be expecting the king to do some things to save the situation.

King Saul was expecting Prophet Samuel to come and offer the required sacrifice before they would go to the battlefield. Samuel had promised to come in 7 days (v. 8), but the days lapsed and Samuel hadn’t appeared. Saul felt he was under pressure because the people were scattering from him, and that would be very serious. He misfired! He ventured into what was not His divinely given responsibility.

It is not the God-given role of kings to offer sacrifices. That is reserved for the priests. Saul was a king. Samuel was the priest/judge/prophet. God doesn’t joke with people who poke their noses in what He hasn’t sent them. Hope you have not forgotten how He dealt with Uzah when he touched the Ark of Covenant unjustifiably. What became of King Saul because of his impatience (vv. 11-15). If he had waited a little further, his story would have been positively different. Are you patient enough? (cf. Jas.1:4). God works with TIME. He can neithe…
