FEAR ALMOST SANK PETER
Read: Matthew 14:25-31
Matthew 14:25-31 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
MEMORISE:
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (1 Timothy 1:7)
EXPOSITION
Today is World Tuna Day, and tuna itself, is a large fast-swimming, widely distributed ocean fish with a tapering body, large formed tail, and pointed head, native to warm and temperate waters. On this note, it is not out of place to look at Peter’s experience on the sea with Jesus that almost sank him.
Fear is an empty force, created and empowered by our mind, based on situations around us. See Peter who took the bold steps of walking on water with Jesus, while the storm raged, immediately redirecting his attention on the storms and away from Christ. Hear the storm telling him, “You are going to sink.” Lo and behold, Peter began to sink. Dear has several disastrous effects, if we give in to it.
Fear torments, making one to lose his comfort. Fear brings limitation and setback. Fear creates worries and negatives thoughts. Dear is a killer and can turn great men to cowards. Fear is a sinker; it sinks destiny. Peter, the bold disciple, lost his balance to fear, and began to sink immediately. Was it not for fear that the same Peter opted for the denial of his Lord and Saviour at that must crucial period, despite having boasted that it would never happen, come what may, when warned by the Lord?
Many persons that are backward in life, on their sickbeds, and some who have gone to their early graves, were victims of fear. They gave room to fear and paid dearly for it. Fear not appears several times in the 2 Tim.1:7, fear is a spirit… Spirit of fear. Therefore, to overcome it, a more powerful Spirit is needed, and that is the Spirit of God, Whom anyone genuinely born again possesses. He is the Spirit of power, love, and sound mind. If we operate with God’s Spirit, we eliminate the Spirit of fear from our lives, making it to be only a mirage and not a reality, for where the Spirit of God is, there is liberty (2 Cor.3:17).
PRAYER POINTS:
1. I receive the Spirit of boldness to conquer the fears of my life, in Jesus name.
2. Today, I become victorious in the battle of life, in Jesus name.
3. Lord, deliver our youth from the fear of poverty that leads them into godless practices.
