THE COURAGEOUS BENAIAH
Read: 1 Chronicles 11:22-25
1 Chronicles 11:22-25 Benaiah son of Jehoiada, whose father was a valiant man of Kabzeel, had done mighty deeds. He slew the two sons of Ariel of Moab. Also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in time of snow.
He slew an Egyptian also, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian held a spear like a weaver’s beam, and [Benaiah] went to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and slew him with the man’s own spear.
These things did Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men.
He was renowned among the Thirty, but he did not attain to the rank of the first three. David put him over his guard and council.
MEMORISE:
And David said to Saul, Your servant kept his father’s sheep. And when there came a lion or again a bear and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and smote it and delivered the lamb out of its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard and smote it and killed it. (1 Samuel 17:34,35)
EXPOSITION
If the evil that men do lives after them, definitely the good that men do will outlive them. To leave a legacy requires a whole lot of efforts. Achieving great things, whether for the Lord or oneself, do not come by chance. It sometimes involves risk, endurance, and commitment. The case of Benaiah is a great lesson for us today for he dared all deadly things to defend his master.
Let us examine the factors that propelled him. One, he had love for his master, David. He was like an Aid-de-camp to the Governor of a state. Such people prefer to die than see battles overcome their boss. Two, his love for his nation, Israel, made him dare both terrible men animals. To him, he was being patrotic; he must work assiduously to justify his pay. But little did he know that he was writing history. Three, he was only fulfilling his obligation to God. Servants (slaves), be obedient to those who are your physical masters, having respect for them and eager concern to please them, in singleness of motive and with all your heart, as [service] to Christ [Himself] (Eph.6:5)
Those who will leave a good legacy here must be courageous, fearless, worth of taking risks, and men of great faith; men in whose hands the staff is more powerful than the spear (cf.2Tim.1v7). How far can you go, defending the faith that was once extra mile for Him today and always. Remember, He is not a debtor!
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, help me to leave and serve You with all my heart.
2. Lord Jesus, help youths to be strong in You and be risk-takers in matters of Your kingdom.
3. Father, help build a robust relationship between young and old ministers as we all serve in Your vineyard.
