TRUE LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

Read: 1 Corinthians:13:4-7

MEMORISE:

He who covers and forgives an offense seeks love, but he who repeats or harps on a matter separates even close friends. (Proverbs 17:9)

EXPOSITION

We are made by God for relationships, but more often than not, our relationship are broken. Covering a transgression is how you show love and win friends. It is forgiven and receiving the grace to forget personal wrongs others do to you. A certainty of human relations is that others will irritate and offend you, but what you do with those personal transgressions is the key. By ignoring the provocations and slights of others, you esteem them more important than yourself which is true love and friendliness (Phil.2v3)

True love and friendship overlook and forget personal offences against you, and they are fitting for today, which is International Day of Friendship and World Day Against Trafficking in persons. True love and friendship never repeat a person’s failures or sins to others, but foolish men backbite, tale-bear and gossip (Prov.10v12,11v13,16v28).

Covering a transgression silences every backbiting tongue and drives away every tale-bearer and whisperer (Prov.11v13,16v28,Ps.101v5). It refuses to repeat rumours or facts that degrade a person’s reputation. True love thinks no evil of others and does not rejoice when it hears of failures or sins in others lives (1 Cor.13v4-7). Covering a transgression is burying news that reflects poorly on another’s character. Love protects the reputation of others.

Arrogant and rebellious people don’t learn the wisdom of covering personal offences, and ignorant and foolish people learn it neither. Both pretend they must protect themselves by reminding others about faults and weaknesses. They believe they must avenge any slight they feel from others. Say not, I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for his deed.(Prov.24:29). Let every man show the same forgiveness to others that God has shown to him (Eph.4:31-32).

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Lord Jesus, give me the Spirit of true love and friendship that covers transgression and wins friends.

2. Holy Spirit, empower me to always overlook and forget personal offences against me, in Jesus name.

3. Let us pray that God will grant all Christians the Spirit of true love that thinks no evil of others and does not rejoice about failures of others.
