LESSON 1010

CHRIST’S SECOND COMING AND THE BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON

Memory Verse: “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was caned Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war” (Revelation 19:11).

TEXT: Revelation 19:11-21

Just as Jesus came to the earth the first time, so will He return at the end of the great tribulation. Jesus Christ, who came the first time as the Lamb of God will come the second time as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He will come in naming fire with all His saints to execute judgment on the earth and to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of an their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him” (Jude 14, 15). The second coming of Christ is the focal point of the Book of Revelation. It is the time when the Lord will reclaim this world ruined by sinners and ruled by Satan. The earth will be renewed by the sovereign Lord. His return to this earth is a constant theme of the Scripture. Bible scholars reveal that there are I ,845 references in the Bible to the second coming, including 318 in the New Testament. No less than 17 Old Testament books emphasise His return while 7 out of every 1O chapter in the New Testament refer to this event.

Question 1: What are the differences between the rapture and the second coming of Christ?

Some people mistake the rapture for the second coming of Christ but these are two distinct and separate events. At the rapture, Christ will COME FOR His saints while at the second coming, He will COME WITH His saints (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17; Revelation 1:7). the rapture, Christ will appear in the air while at the second coming, He will set His foot on the mount of Olives. At the rapture, Christ will come with blessing; at the second coming, He will come in judgment. The two events will happen seven years apart.

THE ATTTRIBUTES OF CHRIST, THE CONQUEROR (Revelation 19:11-13;1:7,12-18; 3:14; 2:18-23;  Isaiah 63:1-6; 64:1,2; Zechariah 14:1-9; Matthew 24:29,30; Acts 17:30,31)

In Revelation 4: 1 , heaven was opened for the rapture of the Church and now in Revelation 19: 1 1 , heaven is opened again for the return of Christ with His Church. Christ’s second coming will be visible, majestic and glorious. At His first arrival, He came in humility to die for us and to save all who believe. At His second coming, He will come in power to judge the world and to reign as King.

Question 2: From our text, how is Christ described in verse 11 ?

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white harg; and he that sat upon him was caned Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war” (Revelation 19: 11). Here, Christ is seen coming out of open heaven in a picture Of final victory and ultimate triumph. He is here revealed in His attributes. As the Faithful One , He is worthy of the confidence Of His people and as the the True im, He will not renege on all the promises He has made to His Church. “His eyes were as a name of fire” (verse 12) — nothing can escape His penetrating eyes. “And on His head were many crowns” — He is crowned as King of kings and Lord of lords “…and his name is called The Word of God” (verse 13). This is His peculiar name, which belongs to Him only. All these names and attributes speak of our Lord’s glory as the Son of God and as the conquering, reigning Lord and King. Will you allow Him to reign in your life without a rival?

THE ARMIES OF CHRIST, THE CONQUEROR (Revelation 19:14-16; Isaiah 66:15,16; 11:4; Joel 3:12-16; Jude 14,15; Matthew 25:31; Revelation 1:16; 2:16; 11:15-18; 17:14; Psalm 2:9-12)

“And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon White horses, clothed in linen, white and clean” (verse 14). The heavenly hosts of saints, who had been raptured and clothed in righteousness, followed Him. These hosts of redeemed and raptured saints on white horses (symbolic of their victory) accompanied Christ to be witnesses of His victory and to participate in the joy of His triumph. “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, To execute judgment upon all”. Immediately after the marriage supper, our Lord will appear in glory with His angelic hosts arid with His saints. “And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword; that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” (verse 15). He does not need to strike. He speaks and what He says happens.

Question 3: What wilt be the fate Of those who serve the devil during this time?

The nations that are opposed to Christ, worship the beast and follow the false prophet will be judged and trodden down under the fierce wrath Of the Almighty God. This is possible because He is King Of kings and the Lord of lords with absolute power. “And he hath on his Vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS’ (verse 16)

THE ADVERSARIES OF CHRIST, THE CONQUEROR (Revelation 19:17-21; Ezekiel 39:17-22; Revelation 16:12-16; 17:8-14; 20:8-10; 16:2; 14:9-12;  Revelation 20:15)

There are two suppers mentioned in Revelation chapter 19 — the marriage supper of the Lamb and the supper of the great God (verses 9 and 17). The first, which was discussed in the previous lesson, is the period when the righteous will feast with Christ, the Bridegroom. *And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are caned unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God” (verse 9). The second is the supper of God, in which the flesh of mighty men are devoured by scavenging birds. “And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper Of the great God; That ye may eat the nesh Of kings, and the flesh Of captains. and the flesh of mighty men, and the nesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great” (Revelation 19: 17, 18). The choice is yours to make as to which supper you will partake. ThoseThose who are not ready for the feast of the marriage supper of the Lamb may become food for the birds at the supper of the great God. The end of the chapter reveals the end and destiny of the beast and the false prophet (verses 19-21). These both Were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone”

Question 4: What is the way of escaperrom the looming Judgment Of God ?

“Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD” (Zechariah 1 :3,4) . The only way of escape from the judgment of God is to turn away from sins by repenting and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead” (Acts 17:30,31)
