DISCRETION: MARK OF CHRISTIAN MATURITY (1)

Read: Matthew 5:38 – 48

MEMORISE:

Good sense makes a man restrain his anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression or an offense. (Proverbs 19:11).

EXPOSITION

Discretion is the ability to know the right action for any occasion. Godly discretion chooses to delay and postpone getting angry when someone offends you. It  is the mark of Christian maturity, for only wicked fools quickly sticks back. Anger is temporary insanity, and to give in to its hot and hasty demands will surely cause you to misjudge an offence and retaliate out of proportion (Prov.14v17). Discretion is the wise choice to regain your sanity before judging an offence.

The transgression here are personal offences against yourself. This proverb is not teaching you to pass over, or compromise with sins against God, or rightful authority. Parental authority, civil government and employers must still enforce against yourself. This proverb is not teaching you to pass over, or compromise with sins against God, or rightful authority. Parental authority, civil government and employers must still enforce rules. The offences here are the relatively minor transgression of others that irritate and provoke you.

Jesus taught this rule plainly on Matthew 5v38-48 where He called for offering the other cheek to personal enemies. That slapped our cheek. He said you should not resist evil, when it is a personal offence against you and to do good to your personal enemies. This is the way of godly peacemakers, and they become very good at it. They forgive enemies so easily. They are the true sons of God.

Discretion, if practiced consistently, personal relationship would be perfect and human societies would be joyful and productive. This is true love and friendship. Marriage observing this rule will be glorious. Churches practicing this discretion will be happy and spirit-filled. If everyone overlooked the personal offences and gloried in the opportunity to forgive, life could be wonderful.

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Lord Jesus, give me the Spirit of discretion to know the right action for any occasion, in Jesus name.

2. Father, endow me with the Spirit that choose to delay and postpone getting angry when someone offends me, in Jesus name.

3. Lord Jesus, grant our churches the grace to practice discretion, such that members will overlook personal offences and embrace opportunity to forgive those that offend them.
