WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE LOVELY

Read: Philippians 4:8-9

Philippians 4:8-9  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

MEMORISE:

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)

EXPOSITION

Lovely is a virtue of being delightful (enjoyable or pleasant), beautiful and pleasing, especially in a harmonious way. Anything lovely is good looking and atracting love. Such will be caring, friendly and loving. Believers are designed by God to be lovely and  embrace lovely spiritual values. The life of a believer should ooze out sweet aroma to God and everyone around. That is exactly what Matthew was saying in his gospel (Matthew 5:13-14): You are the salt of the earth… You are the ight of the world. The life of the believer is such that should show the love of Christ to the World, so that the world would come to Christ through the believers’ demonstration of love; not to love the world and follow its passions and ways.

Apostle Paul talked about hearing things that shouldn’t be, in the first place, mentioned among unbelievers, in the church, when he addressed the Corinthian Christians (1 Cor. 5:1). It is an aberration to hear things that do not glorify God and edify others in the church, among people who are expected to be believers, children, replica and representatives of God. Only things that are lovely and that bring glory to God should the believers do, and unbelievers should hear amongst them. They must show God’s praise. The people outside the church should find the church fascinating to enter and accept Christ. This is not talking about physical structure, now but Christly inner beauty.

You are a kingdom representative. You cannot afford to live recklessly. Just as an ambassador must live life worthy of emulation to boost the image of his country which he represents, so are Christians ambassadors of Christ whose hearts must be fixed on lovely things to the glory of God, honour of His name, and the edification of others. God will help your resolve to set your mind on things that are lovely.

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Lord, help me not to disappoint You as Your representative  here on earth.

2. Holy Spirit, let the world see Christ in, and through me.

3. Lord, assist your Church to live up to her expectation and mandate.
