TOPIC: STOP LISTENING TO FALSE PROPHECIES

Read Jeremiah 29:8,9

MEMORISE: Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out to the world (1 John 4:1)

EXPOSITION

Jeremiah told the people of his days (the exile bound people of God): ‘For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says the Lord’ (Jer. 29:8-9). Many false prophecies had gone among the exiled people of Israel about the number of years the exile was going to take. Precisely, one of the so called prophets, Hanniah, had said that within two years, God was going to break the yoke of Babylon and the people of God would come out of exile (Jer. 28:1-4). Guess what became of him and his false prophecy (Jer. 28:12ff)!

To show that God abhors false prophets and prophecies, the prophet died and the people of God could not come out until after 70 years. One of the banes of the Church and church ministry today is false prophets and prophecies that pervade every nook and cranny of the church. This is the era of falsehood – all manner of lies. The devil, the father of lies, is the originator of all these. Just as God spoke through Jeremiah in those days, He is speaking to us to stop listening to false prophets and prophecies. Why? They distort, corrupt and weaken our faith in God. Lies usually lead people out of God’s will. They render the Word of God impotent in their receivers’ lives.

Number one solution is to learn to test the spirits, i.e. to place their sayings side by side the Word of God to check for any discrepancy. In addition, people should not be gullible – don’t believe anything anyhow without checking well. Be ready to oppose anyone and anything that contravenes God’s sure standard. This is possible by being Spirit-filled. The Spirit leads us into all truth (Jn. 16:8).

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, I ask for the spirit of sound mind and discernment so that I don’t fall prey to false prophets.

2. Lord, let Your Word dwell in me richly to stand against all forms of lies from the pit of hell.

3. Lord, cause the trades of those peddlers of falsehood in churches to suffer irretrievable losses that would free those churches from the clutches of false prophets/teachers and their doctrines, henceforth.
