FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 4:8-17 (KJV)

8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.

10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.

12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.

15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.

17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

The MESSAGE:

Many people have missed out and many are missing out on the blessings they ought to derive from great agents of heaven called prophets. Especially in the Old Testament, prophets of God were used to fulfil God’s glorious purposes in the lives of individuals (widow of Zarephath, Naaman), families (woman of Shunem), wife of the late son of the prophet, land and city (Jericho), nations (Israel, Samaria, etc). The Bible says, “And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved” (Hosea 12:13). Furthermore, to buttress the importance of the prophet in God’s agenda, the Bible says, “Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper” (2 Chronicles 20:20b).

Prophets are God’s oracles and carriers of His power and authority. They are anointed and serve as His change agents. They hear from God and reveal the mind of God to people. Prophet Moses led Israel out of Egypt through divine and dramatic deliverance. Also, by Prophet Joshua, God led Israel into the Promised Land.

The Shunamite woman did not know that God brought Elisha her way to use him as her destiny helper. She decided to follow instinct. She provided him a room and a bed to sleep, meals and everything that would make the man of God comfortable. What did she get in return? Prophet Elisha spoke into her life and the long-standing problem of barrenness bowed out. She became a proud mother of a baby boy.

King Hezekiah had just received a threat and disturbing letter from Sennacherib, the Syrian war general. He had seen the army and was disturbed. He contacted Prophet Isaiah who assured him that God purposes to disgrace Sennacherib. In the end, God’s intervention birthed Sennacherib’s death. He was killed by one of his sons in the house of his god (Isaiah 37:21-38).

Beloved, who is your prophet? Do you treat him or her with honour? Do you believe him or her? Those who fail to believe and honour their prophets often stay in the wilderness for long and end up unfulfilled. That will not be your portion, in the name of Jesus.
