THE NEW WINESKIN

Read: Matthew 9:14-17

Matthew 9:14-17  Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

MEMORISE: And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved (Luke 5:37-38)

EXPOSITION

The Jews noticed how Jesus did things differently. He mingled freely with the crowd and often went to feasts. While the Pharisees practised fasting and praying as a religious obligation, Jesus did His, as acts of devotion to the Father. John developed an unadorned lifestyle and prudent living as part of his Nazarite call, and his disciples followed his practices. Jesus and His disciples did things that most Jews would not do on a Sabbath day. They picked ears of corn in the field and ate without washing their hands. They were frequently seen in public and social gatherings. Jesus’ presence and lifestyle introduced the new order, marking the beginning of a new era in the plan of God. He showed them a new way of understanding the Law, a new way of worship, and the kind of rest God desired for them.

The Old Testament presents the laws of God that no one can fulfil in himself. ‘For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”‘ (Gal. 5:14). Love is the fulfilment of the law (Rom. 13:10). And this is what Jesus Christ came to offer — the Agape; the truly sacrificial Love of God. ‘Then He (Jesus) said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me”‘ (Lk. 24:44).

We, the hearers of the Gospel are likened to the wineskins, whose hearts need to be made new, and readily available, flexible, and willing to be stretched out, to contain and put to practice the new message (new wine) of the agape love of God which Jesus Christ represents. This is the message of God to you, today, that you make possible in your heart, the engrafted Word of God through His Holy Spirit.

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Lord, I offer my heart as a new wineskin for the outpouring of Your new life, in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord Jesus, let Your newness be evident in my life, home, ministry, and endeavours, in Jesus’ name.

3. Pray for CAC Hanson Region, our father in the Lord, the Superintendent, and its officers at the various levels, as led by the Spirit of God.
