GLUTTONOUS LIFESTYLE

Read: Proverbs 23:19-21

[19]Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
[20]Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
[21]For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

MEMORISE: Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. (Proverbs 28:7).

EXPOSITION
Gluttony, according to Webster Collegiate Dictionary, is one given habitually to greedy and voracious eating and drinking. Gluttony not only pertains to food or drinks, but also other areas of life where one shows sign of greediness. Some people cannot be satisfied when it comes to sex, clothing, shoes, jewelleries even entertainment. Excessive desire of anything is gluttony. Summarily, gluttony consists in excess in eating or drinking. But deeper than that, it is being greedy, or involved in excessive indulgence. Ofcourse, too much of everything is bad. The scripture preaches moderateness in all we do.

Gluttonous lifestyle is characterized by lack of contentment and discipline. Some have fallen into sin of gluttony because of ungodly and worldly influence ; they allow worldly things dictate their taste. The unfortunate things is that Christians are not left out in this ungodly act, they eat and drink without Guage, always wanting to have a taste of everything not minding where it is coming from. No wonder the scripture warns, godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Tim. 6:6). The truth is that if we are unable to control our desires for excessive eating and drinking, or doing any other thing – jewelleries, clothing, sex, and usage of tobacco, even as today commemorates World No-Tobacco Day, we will not be able to control our habits, and that in itself is very disastrous (Prov. 25:28).

Gluttony leads to stealing, idolatry, promiscuity, lie, poverty, among others, and brings shame. A gluttonous person will not have integrity. Obviously, the gluttonous ends up suffering from serious health challenges that can result in ill-timed death. Learn to be contented. Turn away from ungodly attitude and friends. Control your excesses. Godliness with contentment is a great reward.

PRAYER POINTS:
1. Pray for deliverance from anything you know has been your habit which you do in excess.
2. Pray that God will give you the Grace of discipline and contentment.
3. Pray for brethren who are still addicted to alcohol in one way or the other, that God will set them free from their shackles.
