(International Friendship Day & World Day Against Trafficking in Persons)

TOPIC: DON’T BETRAY YOUR FRIEND

READ: Matthew 26:47-50

[47] And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

[48] Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.

[49] And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

[50] And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

MEMORISE:

But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” (Matthew 26:50).

EXPOSITION

Today, being a day of International Friendship, and Advocating Against Trafficking in Persons, let us talk about the issue of friendship, and this time around, within the context of the home/marriage. The main reason God instituted marriage is COMPANIONSHIP (Gen. 2:18). There are two other reasons-forestalling sexual immorality, and raising godly children. Not too encouraging, however, is the fact that betrayal is becoming a norm in the world today (cf. Psa. 41:9), in the same way Judas betrayed Jesus.

In marriage, there are so many cases of spouses betraying their partners into lions’ dens. Ways by which betrayal happens in marriage include money rituals, deliberately exposing sensitive information about one’s spouse to anybody, one’s parents, inclusive, and deliberately hoarding information that can help one’s spouse grow. Others include but are not limited to talking too much about the weaknesses of one’s spouse, abandoning the family altar, as it exposes the spouses’ backs to the enemy, and not giving the needed attention and support to the vision of one’s spouse.

The results of such betrayals are terrible, just like in the case of Judas (Matt. 27:5). The betrayer is doomed (Prov. 17:15). The betrayer’s spouse and home are in danger. The betrayer would also partake of the outcome of the shame that would befall the betrayed. To avoid these, let us allow Christ to be fully in charge of our hearts and homes. Learn from the godly Zechariah and Elizabeth. Put God in His rightful place. Let true love (Agape) prevail. And, block undue interferences.
HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY in our homes!

PRAYER POINT:

1. Lord, rid me of every satanic thought of betraying my spouse in any way.

2. Pray against ‘use-and-dump’ tendencies among our spinsters and bachelors causing them to jilt partners in so-called courtships.

3. Father, help me to forever see my spouse as my God-given true friend, and to relate with her/him as such all my life.

HYMN FOR THE DAY:
CAC GHB 636

1. Jesus Saviour is my Shepherd
Then, fear and distrust remove
From the lion and the wild bear
And from wild and evil beasts
Jesus will guard his lonely sheep
Jesus will care for His own.

2. Satan nearly o’er power’d me
Jesus said, “this is my sheep”
He died in order to save me
Jesus, what great love is this?
With Jesus, victory is sure
There’s nought Him can over come.

3. He leads me in the way of Life,
Near the gently flowing stream;
He makes me rest in green pastures
Where pois’nous weeds do not grow,
There I hear the voice of Jesus
There He makes my heart rejoice.

4. When I walk the valley of death
And there’s fear along my way
I shall not fear any evil.
His rod and staff they comfort me
For they make His sheep rejoice.

Amen.
