Nigerian Baptist Convention Seek Daily Devotional For August 30, 2022 : Topic – Self-Denial

SEEK DAILY (NBC)

SELF-DENIAL

Date: Tuesday, August 30, 2022

Bible Text: Luke 9:23-26

Memory Verse: “Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23, NIV

Charles Haddon Spurgeon said that “true godliness demands self-denial and cross bearing and if you have none of these, you are making a false profession.” This simply indicates that self-denial is a must for every child of God. This thought aligns with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Self-denial is replacing selfish interests with the wishes of Christ as we follow Him. This is not an intermittent experience but a daily experience as a proof of willingness to endure whatever may come our way as believers whose example is Jesus Christ (vs. 23, Amp.). This kind of denial could even be expressed in making decisions that appear foolish to our friends, because of possible threats to our living. When such happens, we should not be ashamed of our decision to follow Christ and the desire to partake in His glory.

Do you find it difficult to jettison your interests for the sake of the Gospel or others around you? If yes, you may be struggling with self-denial, and you may find it difficult to depend more on God. You need to trust God the more and think less about yourself.

Insight: Self-denial should be a daily attitude of believers.

Prayer: LORD, help me to deny self and think more of you.

RBT Passage: Ezekiel 21-22
