TOPIC: THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCE!

READ: Jonah 3:1-4

[1] And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

[2] Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

[3] So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.

[4] And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

MEMORISE:

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying (Jonah 3:1).

EXPOSITION

Our God is a God of second chance, and in the text above, we see Him giving the disobedient and obstinate Jonah, a second chance! God protected him in the belly of the fish, because He is the God of second chance. In verse 2 of the chapter, we learnt that God didn’t repeat the instruction He gave to Jonah in chapter 1. He simply says, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you. God spoke to him as if He was speaking to him for the first time! What a gracious God! Even though, Jonah knew God as a compassionate and forgiving God: I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity (Jon. 4:2), He did not reveal Him to the people of Nineveh as such! He ought to have presented God to the Ninevites in a gracious way, but he didn’t. However, the power of the gospel message doesn’t always depend on the character of the preacher. Hence, Paul says, Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife…whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is preached (Phil. 1:15-18). Just proclaim the Word; it will take care of itself!

Despite his earlier disobedience, the Word of God came to Jonah the second time! Reader, just think of how many second chances God has given you! Think of those accidents that would have claimed your life; those near misses in your life; and here you are today! It is because, God is a God of second chance! Paul quotes God by saying, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Paul then concludes, I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation (2 Cor. 6:2 NIV). The Bible also says, Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh (Jon 3:3). Today, will you obey the words of the God of second chance?
