TOPIC: MY FATHER, MY COUNSELLOR

READ: Proverbs 4:1-5

[1] Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

[2] For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

[3] For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

[4] He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

[5] Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

MEMORISE:

I speak that which I have seen with my Father, and ye do that which ye have seen with your father (John 8:38).

EXPOSITION

This generation is gradually becoming doomed for a lack of godly fathers. Our streets are becoming infested with gun, violence, rape, bombings (terrorism), kidnapping, drug abuse, and all kinds of vices. A question readily comes to mind: Where are the fathers?

A father is more than a male parent, or “he who begets a child.” A father in the context of the passage read today, is a man who, by using tough (strong) love through his words and deeds, gives direction and instruction to his children and family. He leads them on the path of understanding about what life is. His mouth is full of good doctrine (principle), treasures of wisdom, and coaches his children to go into the society and get (more) wisdom and understanding that enhance good living (Prov. 4:5-11).

Solomon excelled more than any son of David because his dad made himself as his counsellor. He wrote, the rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother (Prov. 29:15). When a child gets no corrective scolding for wrongdoings, and perhaps gets away with everything, he grows up spoilt, to ruin the society.

Every father is a gift of God to his children and home. Imagine the trust God had in Joseph to foster (nurture, care for, bring up to standard) the Saviour of the world (Jesus Christ) without messing up God’s eternal programme (Matt. 1:16-25). Fathers, your children need you as their counsellors, that they, in turn, may give to their own children what they have seen in you, just as Jesus gives to the world what He sees with God, His Father and His Counsellor.

PRAYER POINTS

1. O Lord, it is time for You to over-rule wherever You are not allowed to rule around us, in Jesus’ name.

2. Declare: Jesus shall reign, forever more. He shall reign forever more.

3. Lord, use me to expand Your kingdom against the onslaught of the devil.

HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 428

1. Thy kingdom come, O God,
Thy rule, O Christ, begin:
Break with Thine iron rod
The tyrannies of sin.

2. Where is Thy reign of peace,
And purity, and love?
When shall all hatred cease,
As in the realms above?

3. When comes the promised time
That war shall be no more
Oppression, lust, and crime
Shall flee Thy face before?

4. We pray Thee, Lord, arise,
And come in Thy great might;
Revive our longing eyes,
Which languish for Thy sight.

5. Men scorn Thy sacred name
And wolves devour Thy fold;
By many deeds of shame
We learn that love grows cold.

6. O’er heathen lands afar
Thick darkness broodeth yet;
Arise, O morning Star,
Arise, and never set.

Amen.
